After years of being exposed to subpar Rap, I finally appreciate Nas is Coming

*pause* :stopitslime:

Spinoff from the It Was Written tread..

I HATED this song for years and skipped it religiously whenever I played It Was Written. As soon as "muthafukkin Dre!" came out my speakers, that was my cue. :camby:
I would literally stop whatever I was doing every time and spend :45 seconds of my life fast forwarding the tape.

Prior to this year, I had maybe listened to the entire song 3 times since the album came out in '96, and I listened to It Was Written like there was no other album made ever for a good year and a half. :banderas:

Now, this shyt damn near sounds :blessed: worthy.

Being a 90s baby, a lot of the stuff older cats say is wack or too poppy is just fine with me. When I first heard It Was Written, Nas is Coming was good to me. I just hated how loud it was compared to the rest of the album :skip:

I feel you, breh. Things was different back then though. The song didn't fit the sound of the album at all, and this was also the first time (if I recall correctly) that Dre debuted his "Interscope" sound. Prior to that song, he was still the NWA/G Funk era Dr. Dre with the funky George Clinton samples, west coast synths and bangin' drums. Then this nikka comes with all these weird sounds and that corny ass hook. It also didn't help that it was sandwiched between Take It In Blood and Affirmative Action.

I concur I've always hated this trash song but nowadays it's actually a pretty decent track considering

Just never fit the vibe of the album for me back in the day plus before it dre had developed (or stole :lolbron:) a particular sound I was accustomed to and this wasn't it.

I'd give the track a 6.5/10 now whereas before it would have got a 4

Yeah, I can't rock with you on Watch Dem nikkaz, breh. That song actually represents the cool lil change up that I expected from Dre when I first heard he would be a part of the project.

Yeah it definitely sticks out that's why I don't go up in arms when people wish it wasn't on the album cause I understand why

I had this revelation when i was listening to some of early 2000 albums, like the other day i was listening to Kim's La Bella mafia album and was like, damn, i don't remember it being this FIRE.

Too much trap nowadays make you appreciate the older stuff because musically it was versatile.

The beats of today arent wack, it's just that there's too much goin' on in them.

I too, used to skip "Nas Is Coming", when i first bought the tape. About 4 months later, i just let that shyt ride.

A lot of these producers today, sound the same. I do like Drake's producer, 40.

Yeah, it's obvious that 40 is well versed in music from the 90's and tries his best to carry on tradition while keeping his sound fresh at the same time. He's the reason that I fukk with Drake's music as much as I do.

Co-sign. I hated on it for years but the beat go hard and NaS spits of course. The Hook is still shaky though. It's the weakest song on the album so that should tell how good "It Was Written" really was. I think the "Firm Album" has a lot of fire on too that people hated on back then. IT's funny that even the "So Called" Mainstream albums of the 90's have tremendous replay value when you listen to the repetitiveness of this era.
