An Egyptian-American woman who had been held in Egypt for nearly three years returned to the United States after the Trump administration negotiated for her release, a process in which President Donald Trump was individually involved, according to the White House.

“The president directly engaged behind the scenes on her behalf and made it clear to the Egyptian president how important it was to him that this American be released and returned,” press secretary Sean Spicer said on Friday.

Trump brought up the issue, which had plagued the Obama administration for more than two years, during a private meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the White House earlier this month.

Aya Hijazi, an aid worker and the founder of a nonprofit organization that aimed to help homeless children in Cairo, flew to Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C., on a U.S. military plane Thursday night, The Washington Post reported. She was accompanied by Dina Powell, President Donald Trump’s deputy national security adviser, and her family.

Trump welcomed Hijazi to the White House Friday morning, and they appeared together for a brief press appearance. "We are very happy to have Aya back home," Trump said, "and it's a great honor to have her in the Oval Office with her brother. Thank you very much."

Hijazi and her husband had been arrested in 2014 on charges of human trafficking and child abuse. She and seven other aid workers who were defendants in the case were on Sunday acquitted of all charges, which had been labeled as false by human rights organizations and by U.S. officials.

reported that the Trump administration had been working behind the scenes to ensure Hijazi would be released at the time of Sisi's visit.

Administration officials told the New York Times that the administration had secured Hijazi’s release before Sisi visited the White House.

Spicer declined to get into the details about the negotiations on Friday, but said that Trump had been briefed on the issue early in his term and had made it a priority, directing his national security team to “address the situation through diplomatic channels.”
