Having Her Cake: The Bride That Married Herself

It was a dream wedding. Complete with a fabulous candlelit ceremony and heartfelt vows to forgive, honor and love ... herself. Yes, Yasmin Eleby promised herself that if she hadn't found a mate by the time she was 40, she would marry herself, and she kept her promise. What better way to start the year than with an act of self love? After a moment of pause, you may be asking, how do you marry... yourself?
The Ceremony
Yasim chose to have one of her sisters who is also a minster, help her say vows, in a spiritual ceremony - because you can't legally marry yourself in America. She says the best part of her special day was having her family there to "stand up" for her. Her other three sisters were bridesmaids and her mom gave her away; or back to herself in this case.
The Venue
He chose Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) because he was able to recreate the space, "so it was like an open canvass," says Darrell."It seems natural that they would choose this space," according to John Guess Jr. CEO of HMAAC, "since the community feels welcome here."
This event is just one of many unique experiences audiences have at HMAAC. In addition to showing classic and contemporary works year round, HMAAC facilitates discussion on contemporary issues facing the African Diaspora. They host everything from regular church services on Sundays to independent film screenings to exhibitions and symposia to discussions of race, culture and feminism. "We don’t just want to heal through presentation of culture," said Guess, "we are into problem solving and transformation."
The Honeymoon
Details on how this union was consummated will remain private, but Yasmin loves to travel. She plans to visit Cambodia, Laos, and the jazz festival in Dubai this year, her extensive plans will serve as a honeymoon.
