Could a dramatic television series based on professional wrestling work?

Think "The Wrestler" meets "Breaking Bad" or "Orange Is The New Black" (I can't really think of a show to compare it to)...

....a dramatic series that follows the on-screen/off-screen lives of pro wrestlers, the scandals, the pain, the death, the murder, the romance, addictions, estranged family relationships, etc.

They could even base it on the boom in the 90's. Would people tune in?

I started writing one a while back but I'm not so sure I could really pull it off. The idea was to keep the storyline kayfabe. I think that's the only way WWE, who are really the only people who could pull this off with success, could/would do it.

My idea of wrestling ten years from now is exactly that. A half-hour TV show as the OP explained, supplemented by a live weekly arena show like Raw, which instead of all the backstage floating camera techniques (which make no sense whatsoever) is purely wrestling and backstage interviews, which in truth, they are getting back to.

The only thing I'd change is maybe doing one based on the 90's with flashback episodes of the 70's/80's...

Not a fan of reality TV so not sure if it would work but I don't wanna see it (the backstage/life bs I mean)

But If I had a wrestling company, I would present it as dramatic television... that's why I love LU so much.
Everyone over 10 years of age already knows this shyt is a work, might as well just build some characters and tell some stories ffs... add to that high production values, and story arcs that actually mean shyt and im def on board. I know a lot of people could get on board with that.

Why not? Obviously the goal should be to make the in-ring secondary to the backstage politics.

But we all know how gritty this shyt could be, certainly more ao than other professional sports.
