I'm trying to decode Mastermind.

Look what happened in Manhattan

A couple of years ago when guns started clappin'

Two of my dogs fell, two of my nikkaz ran

They was amateurs in beef with a grown man

I always felt that Nas was talking about the incident between CNN and Junior Mafia in front of Hot 97.

Capone-N-Noreaga Deny Any Role In Hot 97 Shooting - MTV

Knownin' that I'm surrounded by OGs that I don't really get down with

They got a separate table for their freaks bought them drinks

So we could talk man-to-man so real nikkaz could link

I knew, they kill hos too like Ray Carutth

They used to spray troops, now they managing groups

The main nikka sunny had big money since '82

Had two of my dogs whacked, nothing I could do

That was back when I had no crew, I switch that

Now I'm strong with nikkaz who felt Sunny was wrong

My money's long his money is weak, he's losing sleep

Trying to feel me out, to see what it's gonna be

But I'm a Mastermind

Who are these OG's Nas is talking about?

I think Sunny is code for Supreme who had E Money bags killed who Nas was cool with and maybe Stretch. I remember reading some where that Nas met with Supreme about collaborating with Murder Inc. and he also met with Haitian Jack with Lakey the Kid. As we all know Haitian Jack and Supreme had dealings with hip hop artists.

But who felt Sunny was wrong?

Shout out to the Alchemist on the beat.

Mastermind was an instant classic to me.

"Last Real N*gga Alive" is a song that has grown on me over the years. Dont get me wrong, I thought it was good. The beat just wasnt as dope as Mastermind...but the lyrics are just as deep. He told the whole game...

" There's some ghetto secrets I can't rhyme in this song .... There's some missing pieces I had to leave out."

I like and appreciate the remix, but it hasn't aged too well. The original is fine wine, though.
