Read this article by Milton Friedman:
The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits, by Milton Friedman

I think he is dead on. The only thing he doesn't touch on is using the auspices of social responsibility to generate profit. Are we expected to believe that businesses sponsor charity events for any reason other than 1)marketing 2)tying their brand good/warm feelings? You see this all over the place all the time but the reason it comes to mind today is because of the upcoming Pink October in the NFL. Are we really supposed to believe that the NFL gives a **** about women's health for any other reason than to sell pink products? Seems pretty transparent to me. I dunno man :manny:

It would be nice if businesses acted as if they had "social responsibility" and avoided doing things that are harmful to society at large, but I don't think that's realistic at all. That's why you need rules about what they can and can't do.

Seems pretty naive to expect businesses to regulate themselves.
