E-commerce giant Amazon has registered three cryptocurrency-related web domains, online records show.

According to information from Whois Lookup, three domains – "amazonethereum.com," "amazoncryptocurrency.com" and "amazoncryptocurrencies.com" – were registered on Oct. 31. The domains are linked to Amazon Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. that has been attributed to past patent filings from the e-commerce company.

Phone numbers listed on the registration documents connect to Amazon's legal department, though a representative of that office could not be reached by press time. The registrations were first reported by industry news site DomainNameWire.

At this time, it's not entirely clear what purpose the domain names will serve.

As posited by DomainNameWire, Amazon may be simply moving to safeguard its brand. Back in 2013, Amazon secured "amazonbitcoin.com," which currently redirects to Amazon's main page – an arrangement that further suggests the protective intent of the registration.

Alternatively, Amazon could be seeking to avoid confusion between cryptocurrencies and Amazon Coin, a virtual currency product introduced in 2013 that serves as an online payment method for customers.

Representatives for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Or are they really going to be using etheruem?
Just speculation for now. :to: Haven't seen any articles on specifics since sharing the OP. Another one provides info about Amazon Technologies 24-page Patent #: US009466051 with diagrams (pp 3-10):

...fact that Amazon’s legal department registered three new domain names; amazoncryptocurrencies.com, amazoncryptocurrency.com and amazonethereum.com, could be a signal that the Seattle-based company may be gearing up to allow its customers to use cryptocurrency to pay for e-books, movies, or even, ordinary products.

In fact, Amazon’s patent “Funding access in a distributed electronic environment” published in October 11, 2016, might be one of the most important documents revealing Amazon’s intentions to enter cryptocurrency market.

“In a first embodiment, each party determined to be responsible for at least a portion of the cost of access to a set of resources under a customer account might be required to provide an appropriate amount of digital currency with a request. For example, a delegation policy might allow access to resources only where a request for access includes a source of funding, such as a digital cash payment, in addition to valid user credentials and other information discussed herein. Such a request then can be processed and/or have resources allocated without requiring a source of the request to first set up an account with the customer and/or provider. Various types of digital cash, electronic money, or crypto-currency can be used, such as Bitcoins provided by the Bitcoin P2P Currency System,” the patent says.

Bitcoin,Litecoin,Ethereum: Amazon Coin is shaking up cryptocurrency markets

Aside: They have patents for underwater storage facilities and airships to aid fulfillment centers. If their patent for drones and airships with the launch of delivery with Amazon Air Prime being launched are any measures then ethereum is strong probably.

Amazon coin may be a way to test the market and profitability.

They didn't need to create Amazon coin in 2013. I think it was a test... Even the ceo said they wouldn't go to bitcoin unless there was a demand.

Amazon already Owns a good market share of its Own industry- so the next level is Dealing w more international shipping and with governments.....
If thats the case the Ethereum would then be the best option since major corps and some govs are already on it
