I think it would be cooler if they just made a sequel to the original. Name it FF7-2, and have the story be a continuation of the first one. Just would be

Better story than 8 and 9. If you need a reminder, 8 is about orphans who have amnesia via GF and poor plot devices....9 was about moon children, a plot already used. For me, 10 was original in story and gameplay aspects, but the villain was lame compared to Sephiroth, and it didn't have memorable characters like Vincent, Cait Sith, The Turks, etc.
Seven had everything; memorable characters, fun sidequests (gold saucer), and one hell of a memorable lead. As much as I like Squall for being a badass leader and sole user of the gunblade, Cloud had every facet of a personality, instead of being a cardboard cutout/posterboy for the "emo life".
Then there's the music....try as they did, nothing has beaten "One Winged Angel", nor has any antagonist been as memorable as Sephiroth. Seymour? Edea?, Sin?...nope.
