"original" mixtapes have been around for years, not sure why you're trying to make that distinction now. Free and paid.

If I had to take a wild guess it has to do with the fact that when a project does well, it's an album. When it does not, it was just a 'mixtape'
Mixtape were always free. If it's sold that's an album. How you just take a project, sell it on iTunes, make hard copies, it makes the charts, and its a mixtape? That's an album. Whats the difference then?

There are some albums that became mixtapes etc. And vice versa plus some dudes drop album quality stuff on tapes but the label might not count it as an album

I already know he's still signed to YMCMB, lol @ anyone who thought he got off with IYRTITL. But if it didnt count as an album on his deal and YMCMB still got paid (which they did obviously)....that's kind've suspect.
its not just drake tho, I see Future mixtapes on spotify and i seen Nipsey release "mixtapes" for sale. Well Nip is indie so thats different i guess.

I don't have an issue with it minus the fact that some of these "mixtapes" are better than the artists official releases (i.e. Big Krit- Return of 4Eva, Ross- Rich Forever)
