Now in the midst of all these recent shootings, chokings and murders by police on black men happening I started doing a lot of personal black history studying that I never did or ignored in school and just been on my pro black shyt lately. I seen a thread about this talking bout "why do black Americans stay in america" and everyone was going back and forth about Canada.... Just a quick history and facts I've learned about Canada and the history of slavery there...
Now I'm not saying Canada is the perfect end all to happiness, peace and prosperity. But when you compare it's history to the US, and you see all the things that have been happening for years since slavery and segregation were abolished in America, KKK, lynchings, race riots, and all that other stuff it makes me wonder. Racism still exists everywhere where there are groups of different people living amongst each other but in America it's rampant and a much more racially driven society. It's hard on a black male. It's hard everywhere but I can imagine it being a bit easier for blacks in Canada being that their media doesn't stereotype them as gangsters and thugs like we get in America thanks to gangsta rap or gangsta movies. I mean does Canada even have gangsta rappers or trap houses? I wouldn't know, but that's besides the point. Canada's history seems pretty clean compared to most areas in the world
- There were only 2,000 recorded black slaves in Canada compared to America's 4 million. 1200 between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island / 300 in lower Canada (Quebec) / 500 to upper Canada (Ontario)
- The first slaves in Canada were Aboriginal ("Indians") who enslaved other Aboriginals that were rivals and only purchased a small modest amount of slaves.
- The blacks were usually called "servants" and worked as house servants and farm workers.
- Canada never had a major plantation that needed slaves. Slaves were only brought for the lack of laborers cuz everyone was either fur traders, missionaries and farmers.
- Canadian abolitionist felt slavery was an offense against Christianity and in 1793 the Act Against Slavery gradually abolished slavery until 1833 when it was officially abolished. Which means slavery's been over for 181 years now with no segregation laws in between.
- The thousands of black Canadians who volunteered in the War of 1812 were rewarded by being set free and protected by the courts for their freedom.
- Throughout history there's never been an actual KKK or hate group in Canada. Only one recorded was 90 years ago in Ontario.
- Segregation was never a law, only unofficial in certain areas.
- Free health care for all Canadians? You gotta care about your people to offer them that.
- Customs is a bytch getting into Canada. They have 0 tolerance for people with criminal records or potential criminal backgrounds. They want their people civilized and active members in their society.
- Canadians have a reputation of being friendly nice people.
