The Italian general election will be held March 4, 2018, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s Cabinet agreed Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Before the government could set a date, President Sergio Mattarella had to dissolve the parliament, which he did earlier Thursday.

Italy’s political landscape ahead of the March election is highly fragmented and analysts have predicted there may be no clear-cut winner, especially due to a controversial electoral law being implemented for the first time.

The current front-runners in the opinion polls are the anti-establishment 5Star Movement, polling at around 29 percent, followed by Gentiloni’s Democratic Party.

However, neither party appears to have a realistic chance of reaching the 40 percent level of support needed to establish a governing majority and the 5Stars are resistant to forming a coalition.

Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi‘s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s Northern League could join forces in a coalition, but are still working out the details.
