No they were never in the same division

although what you are saying is true there had been preliminary talks at least on two separate occasions. one was after Hopkins beat Tarver and Toney said he would come back down to 185 to meet. then when Hopkins was wanting to fight Haye after Haye beat Valuev, Toney wanted him then too but I think B-Hop ended up fighting Roy again and never going up in weight. the reason why it was never serious was a combination of Hopkins wanting x-amount to go up and Toney just not being conveniently in that neighborhood.

Toney’s ideal opponent was an aggressive fighter to came at him and gave him opportunities to counter. For example, Barkley and Jirov. Hopkins was better on his feet, extremely smart, and difficult to hit. He was a better middleweight in his prime IMO and would beat Toney.

Toney would have won when they were both in the same division or a division apart, from 1992-94, assuming he was in shape. Hopkins was still improving.

@patscorpio @Newzz was this fight ever close to happening?

They were scheduled to fight in 2003 at 190 lbs after Toney beat Jirov. Hopkins was supposed to go up a crazy amount, 30 lbs. They had a couple press conferences, then it got canceled. That would have been too much for Hopkins to put on.
