I have taught American history for 27 years at a university, and I open every class with a standard lecture that focuses on the three kinds of history: what actually happened, what we are told happened and what we come to believe happened. This is important because we live in a world in which what people believe happened is all that matters, and trying to get to the facts sadly appears less relevant.

John F. Kelly’s assertion that the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War baffled me, and I found myself having to tell my students that it’s this kind of opinion-based knowledge that is reckless, and why we must strive for fact-based knowledge.

--STEPHEN D. ENGLE, Letter to the Editor

Opinion | Baffled by John Kelly’s View of the Civil War
A history professor disagrees with the chief of staff’s comment that lack of compromise led to war.

All you have to do is read each state's declaration of secession to know there was no compromising with the South.

The South was never going to end slavery and they made it plainly clear in these documents.

It's sad that this is even a point of discussion.

Nah, the military is a great way for a lot of black folks to transcend their current situation.

Not really

sometimes

but not really
The vast majority don't see combat or return home safe. The GI bill is a plus if education is your goal, but you don't have the means. The networking aspect is real. If you work in tech whole there you are a valuable hire if you already have your clearances (PTP-H/IT2 billets are around 40k per) and you could easily make 70k doing escorts (well into 6 figured if you're skilled), and it's an escape from an environment that'll do you in for many.

Coates is too long winded for my tastes, but I'm sure we'd agree here. Kelly is an idiot, at the very least.
