New PS4 update bricks gamers’ console, Sony wants $150 to fix it
James
Sony recently released the big
2.50 PlayStation 4 update, bringing a slew of new features. However, as with previous updates, it now appears that the 2.50 also brings its own problems.
The most serious of the problems, which has been reported several times on the
official forums, is that the console fails to start up after installing the new update. Apparently, there’s no way to boot up the console after the update.
But when one PS4 gamer contacted Sony tech support about his bricked PS4, Sony’s response was quite interesting: the company wants the gamer to ship the console in for repairs, and to pay for it. Which comes out to $150,
plus taxes and shipping.
Sony wants the user to pay for repairs because the console is out of warranty, regardless of the fact that Sony’s own firmware update bricked the console.
“Sony wants the user to pay for repairs because the console is out of warranty, regardless of the fact that it was Sony’s own firmware update that bricked the console. “
This isn’t good customer service no matter how you look at it — even if the console is out of warranty, if the company’s own system update bricks it, they should be responsible for fixing it, not the gamer.
Even worse, the customer support representative refused to patch him through to a manager, and claimed that if he called the tech support phone line, he’d have the same answer: pay up.
Here’s the complete
chat transcript as posted by the user on the official PlayStation forums:
Ramon: Hello, My name is Ramon how may I assist you today?
You: I have a PS4 that was installing Update 2.5 this morning. It said it would restart but it never did. I gave it time and waited and waited. It never came back on and now it will not come back on at all
Ramon: I see, E. I will be more than happy to assist you today. Could you please provide me with your Sign In and Online ID?
You: (REMOVED)
You: (REMOVED)
You: The update “bricked” my system
Ramon: Ok, E. So, your console is not working at all now, right?
You: no… i can press the PS button on the controller and nothing… i went over and physically tried to turn it on… Nothing
You: it lights the blue light up for just a second and then it goes back out
Ramon: Ok, E. When did you buy the console?
You: like January 2014 ish
You: i’ve not used it much though
Ramon: Ok, E. In this case, you will need to send your console for service. Please provide me with the serial and model number of the console.
You: will i have to pay for service on something that Sony caused?
Ramon: I am sorry but you will need to pay because the console is out of warranty.
You: that’s not right at all… it was working 100% fine yesterday before this update
You: it even fired up this morning before the update
You: when the update said restart… it never did
You: not my fault… it’s the Update that messed up my system
Ramon: I am sorry but in this case that is the only way to fix your console.
You: And I’m telling you I own 3 PS3’s, a PS4, a PS2, 2 PS1’s…. if they make me pay for their mistake… it’ll be the end of PS crap for me
You: how much will they expect me to pay for my system that “THEY” messed up?
Ramon: The service will cost $149.00 plus any applicable taxes, which includes shipping.
You: HAHA… what a joke… this will be good to put out on the forums and web
You: system serial number is __________
Ramon: Ok. Do you want me to proceed with the service registration?
You: or may start with an H or an A… can’t tell it’s too small
You: nope I want… a Manager to give me a call
Ramon: I am sorry but that is not possible, E.
You: sure it is… or i guess i could call into the phone system and get one that way
Ramon: You can do it. However, let me tell you that you will have the same answer.
You: all i can say… i know it’s not your fault… but Sony caused my issue with their update… and will expect me to pay for THEIR mistake
You: way to lose customers
Ramon: I am sorry for the inconvenience. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
You: nope
Ramon: Thank you for contacting Play Station Chat Support. Have a nice day.
A few users have reported having luck with booting the console in safe mode, but it seems that this rarely works.
