Martin O'Malley wants the U.S. to welcome at least 65,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016.

"I support the call from humanitarian and refugee organizations for the United States to accept at least 65,000 Syrian refugees next year," he said in a statement Friday. "If Germany -- a country with one-fourth our population -- can accept 800,000 refugees this year, certainly we -- the nation of immigrants and refugees -- can do more."

Syrian refugees are flooding Europe following the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Syrians due to ethnic violence in the Middle East. The migrant crisis has engulfed Europe, leading many to ask whether the U.S. would take refugees from the continued fighting in Syria.

O'Malley said the number of refugees the U.S. is scheduled to accept next year is insufficient.

"Americans are a generous and compassionate people. But today our policies are falling short of those values. We must do more to support Syrian refugees -- and we must certainly welcome more than the proposed 5,000 to 8,000 refugees next year," he said.

I am all for humanitarian outreach but before we commit to taking in a large number of refugees I would like to hear exactly what the process would be in regards to accepting the refugees here. We had a bit of a governmental clusterfukk just dealing with the folks displaced by Katrina and they were actual US citizens.

I also think that O'Malley has made his slim chances at being President even slimmer because there is a deep isolationist streak in this country right now and the idea that a plurality of voters would be cool with accepting multiple thousands of Middle Eastern refugees is a pipe dream. I could see Donald Trump and the rest of the GOP candidates plus Fox News and their ilk raising the specter of ISIS and other terrorists sneaking into the country with the refugees just to scare people into not being accepting of this idea.

I will be curious to see what The President will decide to do in the face of Germany being so open and Merkel calling for other nations to do their part.

:whoa: no thanks. If Obama knows what's good for him and the Democratic Party, he will ignore this request. Like the OP said, the worst thing you can do right now Is bring in more undocumented people to deplete American resources. Donald a Trump is going to sustain his lead in the GOP by using this.

Plus we do need to screen them very well and keep a watchful eye on those we bring in. A lot of Syria were cheering the 9/11 attacks :mjpls:

The Obama administration is opening the door to the possibility of allowing more Syrian refugees into the United States, marking a subtle but significant change in the White House's thinking about how best to respond to the mounting humanitarian crisis.

"The administration is actively considering a range of approaches to be more responsive to the global refugee crisis, including with regard to refugee resettlement," said Peter Boogaard, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said Monday.

That statement represents an evolving re-assessment of the situation by the Obama administration following graphic images from across Europe and the Middle East: A 3-year-old Syrian boy washed up on a Turkish beach, thousands of refugees trying desperately to leave a Hungarian train station, and the truck along an Austrian highway where 71 refugees were abandoned and left to die.

Those incidents have led to European nations — most recently France, England and the tiny Vatican City — stepping up their commitments to allowing refugees. And Germany's vice chancellor said Monday that Europe's largest economy could absorb 500,000 refugees a year for several years.

Late last week, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest acknowledged the "terrible humanitarian tragedy that's unfolding in the Middle East," but deliberately stopped short of indicating any possible change in resettlement policy. "I’m not aware of any impending policy change as it relates to immigrants from that region of the world entering the United States," he said.

Monday's statement puts the resettlement issue on the table. The White House did not suggest any time frame for a decision, but under federal law, the president must establish the annual refugee ceiling before Oct. 1.

I anticipate full-on isolationist fukkery overload by the Republicans based off this story alone. And the GOP debate next week will be hilarious with all of the candidates jockeying to be the most hardline on this issue.
