I was never really sold on dude as an actual singer until I got older and my ear became sharper.
I always thought he was one of those artists who only got on because of his looks and performance skills. I mean that's important too, but I never gave his singing ability any type praise. Always thought his singing was mediocre and his weakest attribute. Didn't really take him seriously as a "soul" singer
Boy was I wrong
Dude is actually a VERY talented singer in hindsight. Voice isn't the strongest, but from a "technical" aspect, he's very talented. And very soulful.
What I mean by "technical" is the adlibs/runs frequented in R&B music. "Offscript" singing is what I call it.
R&B singing requires lots of creativity and improvisation. I think this aspect of singing is developed in the church. There's a vast difference between "singing" & "saaangin'". Ginuwine can saaaang
