REACTIONS
François Hollande, president
François Hollande, president
"This an act of exceptional cruelty that has been committed here in Paris against a newspaper, which is the symbol of freedom, against journalists who always wanted to show that they could act in France to defend their ideas (freedom of speech I meant). [cut] We'll have in a few hours the exact count. There will be a reunion in a few hours at 1400, the ministers and the responisble who are directly concerned by protection to every places that similar acts could be done by the same barbarians. The Vigipirate Attentats (highest security level) plan is now engaged. There is also immediate actions launched to find the authors of this attacks. The will be hunted down as long as necessary until they are arrested and tried. France is in shock because it's a terrorist attack, without a doubt."
Christiane Taubira, french Justice Ministress after the attack

Nicolas Sarkozy, ex-president
"The culprits of those barbarian acts have to tried and punished with the most extreme severity. Our democracy is under attack, we have to defend it without weakness. Absolute firmness is the only response possible. France is once again struck by barbarian terrorist and blind violence. We can back down not even an inch. We have to keep saying what we want and keep living as we want to live. Nobody will prevent us. Our nation is grieving, France is struck in his heart. The Republic needs to be together and I call for every French people to refuse amalgams and display an united front against terrorism, cruelty and assassins. The government needs to take tough measures against terrorism. We need to increase our vigilance level and our party will support without hesitation every governmental actions that will go that way. Simply because in this tragic hours, it's imperative that our nation needs to be united and nobody should subtract from that."
Dr Dalil Boubakeur, head of the CFCM (aka French Council of the Muslim Cult)
"The CFCM and Muslims of France condemn with the greatest determination the exceptionally violent terrorist attack committed against the Charlie Hebdo newspaper. This extremely grave act of cruelty is also an attack against our democracy and freedom of speech.
Our first saddened thoughts go to the victims and their families to which we express our total solidarity in this terrible ordeal.
In a international political context of tensions fed by the sheer lunacy of terrorist groups unjustly claiming Islam, we call for everybody attached to the values of the Republic and democracy to avoid provocations which only fuel the fire.
Regarding this national drama, we call for the Muslim community to be as vigilant as possible against manipulations from extremist groups whoever they are.
