Syria is not another Afghanistan for Russia. Russia provides the airsupport and Iran provides the ground support. This is why Assad is able to survive. After the recapture of Aleppo and the failed Hama offensives the rebels have been totally defanged. Plus the war is cheap. Russia is spending like $2 million a day in Syria. In contrast Saudi Arabia is spending $10 million a day in Yemen with nothing to show for it except a quagmire. Russian and Iran working together in Syria was a deadly combo for the rebels and the war is near its end. Plus the war was basically an advertisement of Russian weapons systems which boosted their weapons sales.

The US still has influence in the region though. Russia has tight ties with Egypt and Iran. And one consequence of Syria is that since Iran worked closely with Russia on the ground they got exposed to Russian military equipment. Don't be surprised once the arms embargo is lifted on Iran in 2020 they go on a massive buying spree buying Russian jets, cruise missiles and anti ship missiles. Once Iran gets those weapons systems it will be a force to be reckoned with. The US will regret putting their support behind Saudi Arabia. Smh

Salman is in Moscow, first Saudi monarch to visit Russia. And aside from the oil stuff, the Saudis want to buy Russian weapons systems :dead:
