Someone explain high school football class.

I'm wondering whats the difference from like class 1a and class 8a. I can find anything explaining it. Thanks.

In Louisiana and Texas, 1A is the smallest school (100 some students) to 5A is the Biggest school (800 or 1000 plus)

we go up to 6a here in bama.
the classes basically level the playing field. you dont want schools with only 40 students to choose from to go up against schools with 500 students to choose from

why not just have 1,2,3,4?

A is usually your private schools and public schools in really rural areas, while 5A or 6A is usually the huge public schools in the bigger towns and cities
