SPLC: Hate groups in America increased by 813% since 2008!

So, today I started a new job working on behalf of the Southern Poverty Law Center for a non-profit organization here in NYC. Basically, I was learning the ropes meeting everyone going through orientation and I was presented with this very troubling fact (amongst many other troubling facts) today.

Since 2000, the number of hate groups has increased by 56 percent. This surge has been fueled by anger and fear over the nation’s ailing economy, an influx of non-white immigrants, and the diminishing white majority, as symbolized by the election of the nation’s first African-American president.

These factors also are feeding a powerful resurgence of the antigovernment “Patriot” movement, which in the 1990s led to a string of domestic terrorist plots, including the Oklahoma City bombing. The number of Patriot groups, including armed militias, skyrocketed following the election of President Obama in 2008 – rising 813 percent, from 149 groups in 2008 to an all-time high of 1,360 in 2012. The number fell to 1,096 in 2013.

Lines are going to be drawn in the United States and black people will experience a mass awakening in regards to not only white people, but Hispanics as well.

This generation of Black people (in America and otherwise) are not ready for War. We dont want to be a tribal group who looks after one another. We'd rather be entertainers. We want to be clowns. We want to tap dance for other races and ourselves. We want to have sex with other races but people are gonna learn how it really is

Black people in thsi country are severely unprepared for what's about to come in the future in so many ways. and honestly, I just think many of us don't even care or are even aware at all.

I knew that the amount of hate groups in this country had increased...but by this much? I've never heard of an increase like this...for anything...EVER.

I can say I'm passionate about this job, but it's kind of stressful...I figure I might as well try to make a difference out here in this world, even though at times it feels like it's impossible.

I like the SPLC ... both because I think they do good work, and because conservatives seem to have an irrational hatred for them.

They are on the list of "charities" we can give to through this program at work. I've been meaning to look into what their admin costs are, and kick some bread their way.

New Jersey surprisingly has a high concentration of hate groups in that state. Like if you look at the diagram on it on the SPLC map, the state itself is completely covered.

There goes that stereotype of the "liberal north"...there are so many hate groups in NJ, PA, CT, upstate NY...
