An elementary school in Crossville, Tenn., has painted over a Confederate flag and modified a mural that seems to depict a lynching after complaints posted on social media, according to Knox News.
An official said Cumberland County Schools Director Janet Graham told the maintenance department to “fix” the murals on Monday and by Fridaythe murals had been changed.
The change follows intense national controversy over the public use of the Confederate flag and symbols of the Confederacy that was prompted last year by a pro-Confederate statue rally that turned violent in Charlottesville, Va.
The mural — which was reportedly intended to depict a person from the school’s main sports rivals hanging off a tree branch by his jersey — has been altered to remove the tree branch and will later include something painted under his feet so that it appears he is standing on the ground.
The Confederate flag has been painted red and could end up being repainted as the Tennessee flag, according to the report.
A resident from a nearby town said he had complained about the mural multiple times but, failing to enact change, posted pictures of the murals on social media and asked people to reach out to the school system.
On social media on Friday, after the changes were made, people have been overwhelmingly supportive of leaving the mural “as-is,” Knox News reported.
A school official said she only recently received complaints about the mural.
