None if these coaches became "great" until they won
No, you didn't recognize them as great until they won. I always knew Carlisle was a great coach before he won. Thibs hasn't won a title and he's a great coach.

Golden State Warriors, 2013-2014 NBA Champions, iyo?
2015...just 1 year off
2015...just 1 year off
It's so simple, if you acquire this shyt in real life or on 2K you'll be within arms reach of an NBA Championship
1. An elite scorer that can score at will efficiently
2. A lock down defender that could slow down the other teams best perimeter scorer
3. A co-star in scoring that can take pressure off of the elite scorer
4. A knock down 3 point shooter that is likely to make a kick out open 3
5. A top notch post defender that can alter shots and defend the other teams best post defender
If you have all 5 of those things then you should be considered in the running to be competing for a championship.
The 2016 Cavs, 2014 Spurs, 2012 Heat, 2010 Lakers, 2009 Lakers, 2008 Celtics, 2007 Spurs were all missing one of those things and still won a title. That's 8 of the last 10 teams. I'd say only the 2015 Warriors, maybe 2013 Heat (if Birdman is a top notch post defender) and 2011 Mavs really had all of those elements.
Whereas just last year alone, the Warriors, Spurs, and Thunder all had all five of those elements and failed to win. And even the Raptors, Rockets, and Clippers were pretty close to having all five elements. It's not a good formula.
To win a title, you need five guys who can play their position at average or better on both offensive and defense when the game gets tight and everyone is trying hard. That's harder to find than it sounds. For every gap you have (example, someone who is a defensive specialist but below average on offense), you need an elite player on that side to cover for it. Other than that, it's all about chemistry, game plans, matchups, and maximizing what you have on the court.
