although they were hip hop in spirit (technically hippie") because they did what they wanted too and because hip hop has sampled them and built a foundation of classics off of their songs... sly and the family stone

here's some of the long list of hip hop songs that have sampled from this iconic band

http://www.whosampled.com/Sly-&-the-Family-Stone/sampled/

this group is probably my second favorite band outside of parliament funkadelic. even george clinton acknowledges sly stone's importance to funk and music in general.

before prince, sly stone was the "prince" of his day. helpin to bring funk to the forefront along with the godfather of soul, james brown, with parliament funkadelic bein' like the core successors to the funk. but like prince, sly was known for makin' the perfect blend of funky, soulful, gopsel yet pop element to music. he did it so effortlessly that it was like it was nothin'.

sly forever changed the face of not only soul/funk but music in general with his sound in songwritin'. he's the definition of an innovator

disc 1 and disc 2 of sly and the family's greatest hits is a great introduction to the band if you know nothin' bout they music. they got hits, classics and great music for days and days and days :wow:
