Khalil Mack's sensational rookie season placed him in the upper echelon of 4-3 outside linebackers.

The new Oakland Raiders coaching staff isn't pigeonholing their stud playmakers, however.

Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area reports Mack has been working "a ton" at defensive end during training camp in base and sub packages.

Whether or not they change Mack's roster designation from linebacker to defensive end, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoportnotes that at the very least the Raiders plan on unleashing Mack after the quarterback on nearly every play.

"He's pretty dog-gone good getting after the quarterback," general manager Reggie McKenzie said before Monday's practice. "He's really good going forward, and it's an opportunity to do a lot of different things with him. They're going to use Khalil in all kinds of ways. That's the way it should be.

"He's a dominant defensive player, so you want to let him do what he does best. We'll move him around and play him at different spots. That was the outlook for the defensive staff this offseason, was to put him in position to make plays."

Mack earned just four sacks in 2014, but compiled 52 quarterback pressures. The Raiders plan to increase those numbers by leaps and bounds in 2015.

It will be interesting to see how coach Jack Del Rio deploys Mack during the preseason. The coach compared the young Mack to a more powerful Von Miller, whom he coached in Denver. Last season Mack dropped in coverage on 75 of his 514 passing downs -- for comparison Miller dropped back 108 out of 593, per Pro Football Focus.

All indications are that Mack's snaps in coverage will dwindle significantly. Given what his game tape showed last year, that'll be bad news for opposing quarterbacks.

Whats the word on the backup QB battle?

Ponder is looking like the backup

Catch of the day: Receiver Michael Crabtree nabs this honor again. Surprise, surprise. He’s earned it nearly every day of this training camp. He had two nice grabs in the final 11-on-11 drill. He beat cornerback DJ Hayden deep with an over the shoulder grab and bested Hayden again for a practice-ending touchdown catch. Crabtree found the end zone’s right corner on a fade route, caught Derek Carr’s pass and double-tapped his feet to secure the score.

Derek Carr, Khalil Mack have forged close friendship
NAPA, Calif. -- Khalil Mack was talking to a group of reporters, cameras and all, when a playful voice emerged from behind.

"The Franchise."

A startled Mack turned around. He saw his quarterback, walking and smiling. Mack dropped his head in embarrassed laughter.

Derek Carr kept on walking and kept on laughing.

These two have been doing a lot of laughing since they became the potential faces of the Oakland Raiders in May 2014. The Raiders took Mack, a star linebacker, with the No. 5 overall pick of the draft. Carr, the only rookie quarterback to start all 16 games last season, was taken in the second round.

The two became fast friends. Followers of the two on Twitter know they often correspond.

"We're always talking, tweeting, texting," Carr said. "We've really hit it off. We became close pretty quickly ... it's kind of rare for offensive and defensive guys to become so close because we're not around each other a whole lot, but yeah, we're pretty close friends."

Mack credits Carr for keeping him and the entire 2014 rookie class in good spirits, especially when the team started 0-10.

"He was the leader of our group," Mack said. "DC kept us all together. He just kept our heads straight and told us things will be getting better ... DC's a great friend."

Carr said he believes he and Mack forged their friendship earlier because they both know they will need each other if they are going to turn the Raiders around.

"We both want to get to the same place," Carr said. "And we both want to do it together."

On a positive note, my brother and cousin went to Napa and met Carr. Said he was a real cool dude.

My cousin also took a pick with Bowl Cut at the Hotel bar. They said Mark was cool as fukk, just chopping it up with people like he was just another hotel guest
