Derek Carr, Khalil Mack have forged close friendship
NAPA, Calif. --
Khalil Mack was talking to a group of reporters, cameras and all, when a playful voice emerged from behind.
"The Franchise."
A startled Mack turned around. He saw his quarterback, walking and smiling. Mack dropped his head in embarrassed laughter.
Derek Carr kept on walking and kept on laughing.
These two have been doing a lot of laughing since they became the potential faces of the
Oakland Raiders in May 2014. The Raiders took Mack, a star linebacker, with the No. 5 overall pick of the draft. Carr, the only rookie quarterback to start all 16 games last season, was taken in the second round.
The two became fast friends. Followers of the two on Twitter know they often correspond.
"We're always talking, tweeting, texting," Carr said. "We've really hit it off. We became close pretty quickly ... it's kind of rare for offensive and defensive guys to become so close because we're not around each other a whole lot, but yeah, we're pretty close friends."
Mack credits Carr for keeping him and the entire 2014 rookie class in good spirits, especially when the team started 0-10.
"He was the leader of our group," Mack said. "DC kept us all together. He just kept our heads straight and told us things will be getting better ... DC's a great friend."
Carr said he believes he and Mack forged their friendship earlier because they both know they will need each other if they are going to turn the Raiders around.
"We both want to get to the same place," Carr said. "And we both want to do it together."
