Raiders cut safety Dowling over maturity issues - Raiders: Silver and Black Blog

By Vic Tafur on August 29, 2015 2:11 PM

The Raiders surprisingly waived safety Jonathan Dowling on Saturday, a day before their third preseason game. Dowling had his first career interception just last week when he picked off Shaun Hill in a 20-12 loss in Minnesota.

League sources say Dowling was cut due to maturity issues, and not his play on the field. The Raiders were trying to trade him the last couple of days.

Apparently a series of small incidents built up to where the coaches decided to move on; the personalities were a bad fit. Dowling was shocked when he was told.

Dowling had been playing ahead of veteran Brandian Ross this preseason. The Raiders, who start Charles Woodson and Nate Allen at safety, also just signed veteran Taylor Mays, who was cut by the Lions, on Wednesday.

A seventh-round draft pick out of Western Kentucky, Dowling played in seven games last season as a rookie.

Here are five players with the most to prove in the Oakland Raiders‘ preseason match-up with the Arizona Cardinals. Expect Head Coach Jack Del Rio to let his Raiders’ starters develop a rhythm in more than a half of play. Even if the starters are set, the coaching staff will use this game-tape to pick rotational players. The dress rehearsal game against the playoff contending Cardinals, should reveal expectations for the Raiders moving forward.

1. D.J. Hayden, cornerback

Hayden stunk it up last week against the Minnesota Vikings. Hayden gave up a critical third down and a touchdown pass.

At times, Hayden gave too much cushion. On another play, he received a flagged for illegal contact.

Hayden needs to find more consistency. The Raiders do not have a lot of options on the back-end of their defense, so Hayden’s development is their only hope.

Hayden should play the entire Cardinal game. If Hayden can continue getting his lumps and mistakes out of the way in preseason, then maybe he can develop into a starting cornerback.

Nonethless Hayden needs to show some growth against the Cardinals. He will have a tough match-up against the Cardinal’s Larry Fitzgerald.

2. Sio Moore, linebacker

Moore started 22 games in his first two seasons for the Raiders. Still, he missed most of training came rehabbing a hip injury.

Del Rio went on-record to say Moore is competing for a role-player position. Therefore, Moors needs to show he is ready to stay healthy and play. This new coaching staff is not allowing any incumbent player to rely on past performances.

Moore’s talent and swagger could earn him the starting position, but he needs to show his hip is fully healed. Moore will need to use all of these preseason reps to get the hip acclimated to contact.

Moore must get a lot of playing time versus the Cardinals. Moore must learn Ken Norton Jr.’s new defense. Moore may have gotten a lot of mental reps in training camp, but it is time for the implementation of that knowledge in a live situation. He needs to prove he can still be the same explosive player post hip-surgery.

3. Trent Richardson, running back

A few weeks ago, Richardson caught the Internet’s attention for the wrong reasons. A meme highlighting his terrible vision against the St. Louis Rams went viral.

Richardson did not dispel those questions about his vision. Against the Vikings, Richardson carried the ball five times but only gained five yards.

Forget being a top-five draft-pick, Richardson is running out of time to prove he belongs in the league. Roy Helu Jr. returns to the back field and the Raiders already have running backs Michael Dyer and Taiwan Jones. Therefore, Richardson will need to prove he belongs in the league against the Cardinals.

Look for Richardson to show more trust in his blockers and an improved vision. Richardson must find running lanes and gain some yardage. If he fails to impress for a third-straight week, the Richardson experiment could conclude in Oakland.

4. Rod Streater, wide receiver

Streater lead the Raiders in receiving for the 2013 season. However, Streater dealt with injuries all last season. Now, he fell out of the rotation by missing most of training camp.

With Andre Holmes on the mend, Streater must seize the opportunity to claim a role. The Raiders threw the ball a lot last year, so Streater can still carve out a role.

In this preseason match-up, Streater needs to show the same play-making ability he did in his first two years. He also needs to prove his recovering leg injury can handle contact.

The Raiders’ top-three receivers seem set with Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree and Kenbrell Thompkins. However, Streater can showcase versatility against the Cardinals. This can help him get back into the conversation for regular season reps.

5. Taylor Mays, safety

Mays just recently signed with the Raiders. That makes three teams in one offseason.

Mays is also running out of time in the league. He only started four games in four seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals. Not to mention, the San Francisco 49ers traded him for a seventh round pick only a year after selecting in him in the second round of the 2010 draft.

If anyone can get the most out of Mays, it should be Raiders defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. Mays and Norton Jr. go back to when Norton Jr. was a an assistant on Mays’ college defenses with the USC Trojans.

Mays faces an up-hill battle trying to make the roster half-way through the preseason. Mays needs to show he still has potential in whatever playing time he gets against the Cardinals. He might not know the defense, but Mays needs to show he can still be an imposing force in the NFL

Obviously, Mays failed to show he belongs at any of his previous stops. However, he can use the Cardinals game as a launching-pad to showcase his God-given athleticism that can not be taught.

Yes, this is still a meaningless preseason game.

But, the third preseason game is usually referred to as the most important. Coaches use this game to determine roles for the beginning of the regular-season. These five players need stand-out performances to carve out roles on the Oakland Raiders’ final 53-man roster. The game against the Cardinals could be their last opportunity to prove they can bring something to Del Rio’s football team.
