I get the point, but prison isn't just a point of rehabilitation, it's also a deterrent, no? Loss of freedom for many isn't enough of a deterrent.
If you can have a productive life on the outside, I would argue that the loss of freedom would be an effective deterrent.
Besides, these guys look at crime as dysfunction or chaos in an otherwise functional society. So they send you to prison to put you back on track, rather than to brutalise and punish you.
