They say if you have enough money or common sense you could make it in the game

up and comers can post their own links online and offline amongst other things

taste makers or A&R's are dying out

so what does a manager actually do these days?

what's the difference between 80's/90's/early 2000's and the managers of today

Yeah for people who follow them, which is a lot but, the real taste makers are people(men or women) who know how to be different without looking too different. Most of the time it's men, and women love those men, then other men end up following that man just to get womens attention. Unfortunately, most women are wishy washy so they get bored quick or not like you if you say something they don't like even if its the truth and need to be heard, so trying to appease women is a big mistake. Being you and becoming the best at what you do, is the best way to become a tastemaker.

I figure the role is money,if you got your own money you could just payola your own way onto the radio.:heh:

You're going to lose all your money w/o a single spin on the radio in the process. It isnt just having the money, you gotta know what to do with it. And if you think you're just gonna waltz on a dj and hand him a couple stacks, you get whatever is coming to you

Managers open doors. Nas has doing great recently in part thanks to having very good management. On the other hand I get the impression nobody is really working with the Wu, given how carelessly they blew off their 20yr anniversary.
A better example of bad management (amongst many other things) is Bone thugs. But then I guess it would be a lot harder to manage groups compared to solo acts.
