Im not talking bout the Future's , Keef's and Fetty Wap's:scust:

Im referring to supreme lyricists like Talib, Mos, Nas,Common, Lupe, Joe Budden, Tupac, Wale, eLzhi, etc. Just take away the music and listen to the lyrics as "poetry". Thats what rap is in its essence anyway. For instance,

Imo rappers dont get enough credit for their talent of expressing themselves with words. Not only that, but doing it in a structured way and using different rhyme patterns and techniques and ALSO doing all of this in a certain number of bars. I think the content of alot of mainstream rap overshadows the talent that these rappers have. They are genuises in my book. They have unique skills. Everyone CAN NOT do what they do. The ability to write poetry is a gift. Its not a coincidence that rappers are also some of the best public speakers and orators also.

Taking away the music is going too far. I don't listen to acapella tracks nor do I need the absence of music to appreciate the lyrics. I do agree with your ending statement.

I absolutely agree that some rappers don't get enough credit for their prowess of expressing themselves through words. Ghost named one of his albums "Wizard of Poetry" and that's exactly what he is. So is Scarface, Jay, Nas...

Maybe im wrong but when i think of "poetry" i think of LYRICS. Spoken Word. Not melody and flow. Thats why i said take away the music to really understand the appreciation for the words they spit. Again, im not hating, i just think the Future's and Fetty Wap's are something totally different. You are correct, they cannot be compared to real lyricists.

Poetry has been melody, spoken word, and every mix therein.

Saying poetry is strictly lyrical kinda represents a lack of knowledge of poetry

no offense meant

never said this. Im merely saying that listening to SUPER LYRICISTS like the guys i mentioned in the OP, gives me a better appreciation for how intelligent rappers are. Listening to Future and Fetty Wap doesn't give me that ":ohhh:damn he's an intelligent guy" feeling. Would you put Future and Fetty Wap in the same class as Mos Def, eLzhi, Talib Kweli and Lupe Fiasco as far as LYRICS??? Damn the melody, im speaking on pure LYRICISM.
