I was thinking of them complex lists they put out where an artist names their 25 favorite albums. Got me thinking I wonder how my Brehs on the Coli feel on this. I'd like to see the diversity and similarities.
So pick your 25 favorite albums. don't even gotta be strictly hiphop. And feel free to discuss why you chose it. I'll work on my list right now
Edit: this is actually in order at the moment
Purple Rain by Prince (this was when Prince ruled the world. The movie that came with it. You could see this album in your head playing. The songwriting and instruments on it just perfect. He's a genius)
The Hits 1&2 by Prince (he has so many albums that it's almost impossible to find them in on place even on youtube you can't find his songs. So this has a lot of the essentials in one place)
The Chronic by Dr. Dre (the perfect hip-hop album. From lyrics to melodies to production. Introduced the world to Snoop Dogg who is arguably the most popular rapper on a mainstream level. There are no flaws. Even the skits are classics.)
Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg (this is the perfect example of a rapper using his voice as a part of the instrumental. Probably the best flowing on records I've heard to this day. Listen to Tha Shiznit and you might agree.)
Death Certificate by Ice Cube (my favorite ice cube album. As a white male this album helps open my eyes even more on what's going on in the world to this day even. I grew up where it's majority Mexican and black. Some of us where dudes sprinkled in. My family is Mexican so I'm half breed. But you see stuff go on between cops and blacks or Mexicans but also the stuff going on between eachother. It's harsh and while people have been speaking on these issues forever, cube brought it to everybody In a way his listeners could relate. Bird in the Hand is such a real song. Every song is.)
Nevermind by Nirvana (I love this album. Kurt Cobain may not have been the best with lyrics but I think you could feel his emotion almost more than anybody who's ever written music. Nirvana impact was insane.)
2001 by Dr. Dre (probably the best produced album IMO. With the best hip hop instrumental IMO being Xxplosive. This album is so impressive musically.)
Legend by Bob Marley (my favorite message in music will be Bob Marley's message. Shame he is usually associated with marijuana all the time. Not that I dislike weed. But the way Bob music makes you feel is second to none. I've never seen anybody play it and be in a bad mood. That's what he was trying to achieve.)
All Eyez on Me by 2pac (fresh out of prison and on a mission. I don't think i would love hip hop as much as I do now without this album. It's got the majority of my favorite Pac tracks. I'll never agree that he wasn't lyrical. He definitely had lyrics and quotes for years. But the passion he brought and his ability to write music with real staying power was so visible here. It's like hit after hit after hit. But they weren't BS hits. Music with a meaning.)
The Black Album by Metallica (this album definitely brings me back to when I was young. Great memories of my first drink of beer with my dad. He loves Metallica still and so do I. This was just HARD! Enter Sandman is like the perfect song and it may not even be the best on the album. That speaks volumes.)
Amerikkkas Most Wanted by Ice Cube
Me Against the World by 2pac
To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar (I think after a while this album will crack top 10. It's so well crafted. Kendrick obviously did the damn thing. But everybody who contributed to this album brought their A Game. Can't say Kendrick brought the track down with subpar bars on any song. In vice versa you can't say the instrumentals bring the song down. I like to think of it as real art and a credit to music not just rap. It's very critical in today's era for an artist to speak on what Kendrick speaks on in this album. To me it's more creative than GKMC too. I love this album)
The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem
The Predator by Ice Cube
The Minstrel Show by Little Brother
Makaveli The 7 Day Theory by 2pac
The Essentials by Michael Jackson (its hard for me to pick between MJ albums because one day I like thriller the most. One day off the wall or bad. But this album got a lot of the joints on it. I just like to add You Rock My World to it to make it even better.)
Illmatic by Nas (only reason I didn't put it higher is because I didn't grow up on it and west coast music is too embedded in my brain. So they got nostalgia and my overall vibe down more. But this like the chronic is essential to the genre. If The Chronic is the best musical hip-hop album, this is the best from strictly MC'ing standpoint.)
Tetsuo & Youth by Lupe Fiasco (it kills me because of what FnL or The Cool meant to me in my teen years. And I may fit them in this list still. There's so many albums I want to put on here. But personally, this is the most impressed I been with Lupe's skills. Also the best production I've heard on his albums or tapes. The Mural is probably the best lyrical display ever. Ever.)
Paranoid by Black Sabbath
The R in R&B by R. Kelly (if I want to hear an album with Honey Love, I Believe I can fly, I wish, or whatever. I can go here.)
Kaleidoscope Dream by Miguel (this album from the young king of RnB is incredible. It reminds me of a Prince album sometimes. Like modernized but still influenced. But this is about Miguel. I think his pen game and vocal ability is great. A fan of all his work but this album brings me back to when I first was dating my now wife. He gets points for that cuz this is our shyt.)
The Blueprint by Jay-Z (the reason it's my favorite jay album is because of his prediction of his rise. It's Jay-Z before becoming the megastar he became. But still rapping like he was one.)
The Foundation by Geto Boys (not their best album but my favorite. Before I moved to Baltimore I would come for visits and my first time here this album was the soundtrack for everything we did. It's basically all we listened to. So it's written in my brain.)
