The Vinton teenager that was shot in the head Tuesday has died, according to her mother.

Emma Redlinger, 14, was shot Tuesday night at a home in the 1200 block of W. 4th St. in Vinton. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she remained in critical condition until her death. She suffered significant brain damage.

She passed away at 1:48 Saturday afternoon, according to her mother, Aimee Redlinger.

“My heart is breaking as I write this,” Redlinger posted on Facebook. “I cannot describe the emptiness and pain we are feeling.”

Emma was a freshman at Vinton-Shellsburg High. Her mother remembers her as a spunky child, and an avid cheerleader.

Vinton Police served a search warrant Thursday night at the home where she was shot. The renter there, Robyn Winterroth, said her teenage son was dating Emma. She said the pair were upstairs with two other teenage boys that night, and that she was allowing her son to clean her gun, since he was an avid hunter.

She believes one of her son's friend's pointed the gun at Emma's head as a joke, thinking it wasn't loaded. Then it went off.

Authorities have sealed the details of the search warrant for 90 days, including what evidence they may have collected. Police told KWWL Friday that they were investigating the shooting as an accident.

As her daughter fought for her life this week, Aimee asked for prayers.

“Thank you all so very much for the love and support you have shown us these past few days,” Redlinger wrote. “You have all given us comfort and hope in our darkest hours. Continue to pray and hold each other tight. Life is precious and can be taken in an instant. God bless and wrap his loving arms around each and every one of you.”

A prayer vigil will be held for Emma on Sunday evening in Vinton. It will be at First Christian Church from 5-7 p.m.

“Please come to pray, support one another and celebrate my beautiful baby girls life,” Redlinger wrote.

No arrests have been made in this case.

Guns dont go off by themselves. Someone pulls the trigger and blows someones head off.

If she was a dime, its doubtful anyone would have pointed a gun at her for fun. Being ugly is a harsh reality filled with aggressive content.

I swear, man, now I KNOW why my parents NEVER let me hang out at white kids' houses as a kid. :francis:
I thought they were exaggerating when they said that white kids play around too damn much.
They'd be like "Nah, TimePiece, you can't go to Chandler's birthday party. No telling WHAT they might have in their house. :usure:"
Now I see what they were talking about.
Not only do I see white kids doing stupid shyt on a daily basis, but it seems like stories like this are in the news daily.
