I read somewhere that space pics with all the purple, green, blue, pink, etc colors are shopped. That they add color to show you the detail...

Pls someone tell me that isn't true, and that deep in space it really is beautiful like the pics show.

Yes and no.

It's not really 'adding colour'. Those colours in that photo absolutely exist along the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

The thing is humans have shytty eyes, we can only see into a small part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum, so if you saw the Orion Nebula or other cool space features up close it would not be nearly as colourful, sorry Breh.

It is dotctored, in a way.

Disclaimer: I don't remember the specifics and am just giving you a general idea in this part:
Pinkish color might be the photo viewed from Infared
Green color might be the photo viewed from Gamma
Blue-purple colours might be the photo viewed from UV
Etc.

They take sections from each and put it together, like a puzzle, brighten some colors and voila.

So technically that picture could be a mix of red and orange (or whatever) colours, instead of purple and pink. Depends on which part of the EM spectrum it is viewed from.

Again, this is a general idea and not 100% accurate, I am grossly simplifying this.

So unless you are Superman, who can see the entire EM spectrum, the real life view is duller.
