ANNETTA SOUTH -- If he had had any problems with his family, Jake Evans kept it to himself.
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler noted that there was no evidence of an alcohol or drug problem with the 17-year-old, and authorities had never responded to calls at his home on River Creek Lane.
That was until early Thursday when Evans called 911 and told a dispatcher he had killed his mother and his 15-year-old sister, according to Fowler.
"I have my suspicions, but there's nothing I can say precisely as a motive," Fowler said Thursday. "It's certainly a mystery."
Evans was arrested at the scene early Thursday by deputies responding to his call.
The teen was in the Parker County Jail in Weatherford, where he was interviewed for several hours by sheriff's department investigators.
Evans faces a charge of capital murder, Fowler said.
Fowler identified one victim as Jami Evans, 48, Jake Evans' mother. Authorities did not identify Evans' sister.
The father was out-of-town on business at the time of the slayings. Two older adult sisters were not at the house.
The killings in the gated community just south of Aledo shocked neighbors.
"It's very quiet here," said Karen Miller, who lives in a subdivision across the road from the Evans family. "You see quarterhorses and donkies in pastures. You don't expect something like a killing to happen."
Investigators say they believe Evans acted alone and there was no evidence of any additional suspects in the case.
Evans called 911 shortly before 12:30 a.m. Thursday, telling a dispatcher of the killings, Fowler said.
Deputies responded to the call in the 100 block of River Creek Lane and found the two victims. Jake Evans was taken into custody.
His sister was shot once on a stairway, then several times near the entrance of the home, Fowler said. His mother was found shot mulitple times in an office area near the back of the home, the sheriff said.
Evans told deputies he had used a .22-caliber revolver in the shootings, Fowler said.
"He (Evans) had taken the weapon from his grandfather," Fowler said. "His grandfather had no knowledge that he had it."
The exact cause and manner of death is pending an autopsy by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.
Investigators with the sheriff's department and Texas Rangers are investigating.
Evans was a former student at Aledo High School, according to Aledo Supertindent Dan Manning. He withdrew as a sophomre in January, according to school records. His sister withrew from McAnnally Intermediate in January 2010, according to school records.
Both were being home-schooled, Manning said.
"It's a terrible tragedy," Manning said. "We have teams of counselors at the school for students and faculty."
Jami Evans had been an elementary teacher and an assistant principal for 15 years in the Aledo school district. She had been at Coder Elementary and Stuard Elementary from 1989 until 2004, according to school records. She taught first grade.
