The City of London Police has confirmed that it's arrested a 17-year-old on suspicion of hacking. It's being reported that this is (one of) the same individual(s) behind the recent Rockstar incident. The individual is currently in police custody
Original Story: While developer Rockstar has moved to confirm that this weekend’s unprecedented GTA 6 leak will not impact the game’s development, you can rest assured that the relevant authorities will be hot on the case. And a recent incident with Uber, allegedly instigated by a group named Lapsus$, suggests that the FBI and US Department of Justice may already be involved.
In a statement on its own issues, Uber said: “We believe that this attacker or attackers is affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so. This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies, and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia, and Okta, among others. There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”
It should be noted that Uber appears to be connecting the dots here, and seeing as this is a criminal investigation, it’s unlikely we’ll get any firm word on the perpetrators for quite some time. Nevertheless, numerous members of Lapsus$ have been arrested in the UK as recently as March 2022, with one notorious 16-year-old alleged to have amassed a $14 million fortune through hacking.
