What are the chances of the feds coming in and trying to recruit him or something?

I've heard they do that from time to time with really talented hackers.

Nah. Lulzsec pulled similar shyt on Sony and none of them are locked up still. Doubly so if this kid snitches. Black hat hackers have an opportunity to do good things due to their knowledge and expertise.

Cybercrimes laws have changed since then. The kid has to snitch. As long, he does not get extradited and sentenced on American soil, he will be alright.

It is a possibility, but there is not a shortage of talent. It is usually private companies.

These little shyts are going to get a slap on the wrist and turned to white hats
Eh, not really. The days of being brought on as white hat for compromising a companies security are over. Most of these large organizations have shytty security and the majority of the compromises use known exploits for old vulnerabilities.

The hack that brought down Target in 2013 that cost them 140M in fines was basic.

The Citadel Trojan horse was nothing novel—it was a variant of a well-known malware package called ZeuS and is readily detectable by any major enterprise anti-virus software. But Fazio lacked the massive security infrastructure that Target had, allowing the malware to remain undetected on the Fazio computers. Through the Trojan horse, the hackers obtained Fazio’s log-in credentials for Target’s system.

With access to Target, the hackers unleashed a different malware program, one they bought on the black market for just a few thousand dollars. Experts such as McAfee director Jim Walker characterized the malware as “absolutely unsophisticated and uninteresting.”
Here's a story of the DOJ sentencing a Russian hacker to 7 years for hacking into LinkedIn and Dropbox.

Kids obviously gifted but he's 17, zero life experience and if you were reading his forum posts over his head.

I'm sure the gov has similarly or more gifted programmers/hackers so they don't need this kid if we're keeping it honest.

From the City of London. Guy comes from a well off family. He'll get out of it. Probably will say that he's autistic.

One guy in the uk had actually managed to hack into the top secret us military computers in 2001. The us goverment wanted to extradite him but after a ten year battle he managed to avoid being extradited, and he was not charged due to the fact that he did not commit the crime in us soil. And he was protected by the british government.

He name is Gary McKinnon.
