CHARLES SYKES/CHARLES SYKES/INVISION/APRapper 2 Chainz is facing felony drug rap for codeine possession, prosecutors said Thursday.
Grammy-nominated rapper 2 Chainz has been charged with felony drug possession in connection with the seizure of codeine from his luggage at a Los Angeles airport last year, authorities said Thursday.
Codeine, a narcotic, is an ingredient in the euphoria-inducing opiate cocktail known as sizzurp.
The Georgia-based performer, who once titled a mixtape “Codeine Cowboy,” was busted at LAX and formally charged last week. He is set to be arraigned Tuesday in Los Angeles, prosecutors said Thursday.
It was last June when TSA agents called police after finding marijuana and a bottle containing codeine and promethazine, which is an antihistamine, in the luggage of the “I’m Different” rapper.
Sizzurp, which mixes prescription-strength cough medicine with fruit soda, also goes by the names “lean” and “purple drank.”
If convicted of felony codeine possession, 2 Chainz, real name Tauheed Epps, could face up to three years in prison.
He was not charged with marijuana possession.
“(Prosecutors) only charged what the evidence could support,” a law enforcement source said Thursday.
Epps, 36, was convicted of felony cocaine possession as a teen and was arrested and cited for marijuana possession in Maryland in February 2013.
The rapper got in trouble again in August when Oklahoma City police found weapons and drugs on his tour bus following a traffic stop.
He was charged in that incident with obstructing a police officer, a misdemeanor, after he refused to get off the locked bus at the request of an officer who had picked up on the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Authorities had to tow the bus from the scene with the rapper and his entourage still onboard and then obtain a search warrant.
