Two physical education teachers were fired in connection to a shooting that happened after they went to the wrong apartment after a boozy night

That night Cohen and Hallback went to two bars in Vero Beach before taking Hallback’s red Dodge Charger to the apartment complex where he was meeting a woman, Flowers said.

“A couple hours go by, and it’s about 4 a.m. These guys are seen on video going in and out of the apartment,” said Flowers.

Hallback went inside to be with the woman and Cohen waited outside for him. After a few hours passed, Hallback left the woman’s apartment and went to his car. At that point, Cohen had to use the bathroom so they went back to the woman’s apartment, but entered the wrong one, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Cohen, who taught at Indian River Academy, went to the bathroom and Hallback, who taught at Sebastian Elementary School, got into bed with who he thought was the woman, but was actually a man with his wife and one of their three young children.

According to investigators, the man tried to led Hallback out of his home when Cohen left the bathroom. He escorted the men outside, where ‘a scuffle broke out’ and Cohen opened fire, Sheriff Eric Flowers said at a news conference on Monday.

It is unclear who owned the gun and what happened just before the shooting. ‘We don’t know who [pulled out] the gun at this point,’ Flowers said.

In surveillance video, a man is seen running across the lawn and off screen before the two teachers follow. Just after they are out of sight, four shots can be heard.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to his back and kept running until he found a friendly apartment, where he called 911.

Detective Philip Daugherty said at the news conference the front door to the apartment was unlocked and the men walked inside after briefly knocking.

After they entered, Cohen went into a bathroom, and Flowers said Hallback went into a bedroom and got in a bed — where the man who later was shot and his wife were sleeping with their child.

Flowers said Hallback thought he was getting into the woman's bed when, “the husband woke up and he said ‘what are you doing in my house?’”

Two children were asleep in another bedroom in the apartment.

Reports show detectives talked with the 30-year-old man and his family who told them they were in bed and “awoke to the sound of voices and someone entering their bed.”

The man said he told Hallback he had the wrong apartment, according to arrest records.

A report states as the man walked Hallback out, Cohen came out of a bathroom and they all continued outside.

There, detectives said Hallback left for a short time and returned to find Cohen and the man fighting.

The man said Hallback showed up with the gun. Cohen and Hallback said the man had the weapon and it fell during the struggle and Cohen grabbed it, Daugherty said.

"The combined story from the three of these guys — at some point when they get out into the parking lot, a scuffle ensues," Flowers said. "At some point, somebody produces a gun. We don’t who produced the gun at this point."

The incident was partially captured by home security cameras inside and outside the apartment, which the report states, shows the man running and four shots going off after he passes out of view.

“He (Cohen) admitted to the shooting," Flowers said. "His side of the story was that they were struggling over the gun and it went off.”

At any point, they could've stopped and called 911, Flowers said.

"They could’ve stopped, and they didn’t," Flowers said.

Search warrant
Detectives executed a search warrant at Hallback and Cohen’s home Oct. 14 at 6 p.m., according to Detective Christian Castano.

The detectives were looking for a 9mm gun and clothes worn by the men that night as shown in the video footage.

Inside Hallback’s bedroom, they reported finding the shirt he wore that night, his identifiction and a backpack where detectives said they found 10.5 Adderall pills inside a “small clear plastic bag.” Adderall is an amphetamine that is a central nervous system stimulant.

The detectives did not find a corresponding pill bottle in the home that would point to the pills being prescribed medication.

Hallback refused to talk to the detectives, who then called pharmacies to check prescription records and found none, leading to his arrest on the misdemeanor drug possession charge.

Moore said the two men were still on probationary status as new employees of the School District when they were fired last week.

Flowers said they recovered two guns including a 9mm from the house, but they haven't determined if it was the same 9mm used in the shooting.

Daugherty said the wounded man is recovering.

Records show Cohen remains in the Indian River County Jail on $750,000 bail and Hallback was release on $15,000 bail Friday.

The former teachers claimed the resident first pulled out a gun and Cohen was trying to take it from him. While police have not recovered the weapon, they searched the home where the two teachers live together and found two guns that they have yet to examine to see if they are a match to the one used in the shooting.

Cohen is being charged with attempted murder and is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $750,000 bond. Hallback is being charged with drug possession as police found him with Adderall and no prescription at the time of the shooting. He has since been released on $15,000 bond.

Sheriff Flowers said that neither men have prior criminal records. David Moore, the superintendent of the Indian River County School District, said both men had undergone the proper background checks to be hired. He added that they were both new teachers and new to the community.

‘At any point, they could have stopped and called 911,’ Flowers said. ‘They could have said, “We’re in the wrong apartment and this guy’s produced a gun,” any for those things. They could have stopped, but they didn’t. They fled and they didn’t involved law enforcement in any way.’

Superintendent Moore shared Flowers’ sentiment and said, ‘There’s an expectation we have of our employees in our school district, whether its inside the classroom or whether it’s in the community and that expectation is that you conduct yourself in a way that brings light and a sense of security to our students. Unfortunately, these two individuals feel drastically short of that expectation.’

‘It’s disheartening to have this information come to light and very very disappointing for us as a school system. There is no place for us as a school system, there is no place for this in our community.’

Flowers said, ‘Ten months of being the sheriff, 18 years of being here, there’s not that many stories that sound like this,’ Flowers said.

He added that the man who was shot is expected to make a full recovery ‘and is doing well.'

No one reads articles. :beli:

One of the dudes was smashing a girl at the same complex. He went outside, got his boy, and were going back to the woman's apartment to use the bathroom and went into the wrong unit.

What doesn't make any sense is how they got outside amicable and then started fighting...and then chased the dude who's house it was and shot him.
