Detroit — More than 20 politicians and public officials from Metro Detroit are serving federal prison sentences on Election Day for public corruption-related crimes.
The inmates include former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, ex-Detroit Treasurer Jeffrey Beasley and several former Detroit Public School principals convicted in a bribery scheme. More former DPS officials are scheduled to report to federal prison in coming weeks and months.
The former politicians and public officials were convicted following a series of FBI investigations of corruption within Detroit City Hall, Detroit Public Library, Detroit municipal pension funds, Detroit Public Schools, the Education Achievement Authority and Wayne County government.
