1. Was the #1 pick valid?
2. Who was the best overall player
3. Which player had the best peak year
4. Biggest bust
5. Biggest steal

1. Yea Bogut was solid and was coming into his own before the injury
2. Chris paul
3. 2007-2009 Chris paul
4. Yaroslav Korolev had no business being in the NBA much less a lottery pick
5. Biggest steal is tie between Lou Williams and Monta Ellis who both went in the 2nd round

There were 24 players that played 10 seasons on this draft to compare 2006 only had 13 and 2007 had 20

20 years later and I still can't fukking believe Atlanta took Marvin Williams second instead of Chris Paul. They started Royal Ivey 66 games that season so it's not like they had the "we already have a PG" excuse either.

I felt it was pretty widely accepted that Paul was the best player going into that draft and Bogut only went first because the league was still in that "you can't teach size; always go with the big guy over the little guy" bullshyt. That line of thinking is also a big reason why Oden went over Durant a couple years later.

Looking over the entire draft class, it was really solid from start to finish. A lot of rotation quality players throughout.

What sticks out to me is seeing the name Robert Whaley picked 51st by the Jazz. He went to Benton Harbor, which was a town near me in the area I grew up. He was Mr. Basketball in Michigan in 2001. He had a lot of hype in the region and was one of the top prospects in the country for a while. He had a rape charge his senior year of high school (he was 18; the girl was 13). He got off on a mistrial but in the region it was accepted that he did it. The trial was a pretty big deal.

He wound up having a bunch of incidents throughout his life; trouble just followed him.

Seeing that name takes me back and makes me feel old.

Also IIRC the argument at the time for Bogut over CP3 was that they didn’t need a PG since they already had TJ Ford & Mo Williams

Yeah, they had just drafted Ford two years prior. That was definitely a big talking point.

To me, Bogut never looked special in college, but he was good and that was enough in 2005.

By 2005, I was old enough to realize a lot of "experts" didn't know what the fukk they were talking about.

I was still heavy into college ball back then and I watched a lot of UNC games. Every game they would talk about Marvin Williams being the most talented guy on the team and he was gonna be a top-three pick. He was supposed to be this super athlete and I was always left empty; "that's it?" His hype never made sense to me.

I thought McCants was a LOCK to be a solid pro at minimum. :ninja2:

I look at Bogut going #1 similar to Wiggins…had a good career overall but in hindsight not worth the pick. Can’t really call him a bust but can’t say the Bucks maxed out their value either

I remember dikk Vitale would not stop bigging up Chris Paul as a future hall of famer when he played for wake forest

Should've been the consensus #1 pick but over the years it seems most nba front offices are full of nepotism and incompetence

I remember Marvin getting small KG, Antoine Jamison comps. See his game I could see why they loved his upside, he had a smooth handle, beautiful jump shot, 6’9 240 with a 40 inch vert, his problem was that he was so damn uncoordinated.

But yea CP3 fit the Hawks way more at the time they had just drafted Josh Smith and Josh Childress the year before they didn’t need another swing man but Billy Knight was obsessed with having a starting lineup of all swingmen
