I wish to God we had video.

Fight Shuts Down Mixtape Awards

Although the mixtape awards show is over, the drama that went down during the ceremony is still trying to be deciphered. The first altercation began as Easy Mo Bee began reading out the names for Best Artist on a mixtape.

After calming the crowd down to finish the category, all hell broke out in the pressroom backstage. A member of DJ Kay Slay crew (note: IT WAS KAYSLAY, how he became Mr slap your favorite dj) struck DJ Pudgee P in the cheek, which began an actual fight that smashed awards that were to be given out to winners. Once the fight was broke up DJ Kay Slay came onto the stage and informed to crowd the show was over
.

Appalled by what was happening DJ Kool Herc walked on stage and said, “Leave that ni**a shyt outta here, we all fu**in’ brothers. Clue and Kay need to stop that sh*t”. Kool Herc went on to comment of DJ Clue (who has been participating in the awards show for the last couple of years) “If Clue was about anything, his ass would be here and this would be televised on MTV.” DJ Kay-Slay appeared back on stage to continue what he was previously saying, “I’m not going to let no f**kin’ punk from nowhere talk no sh*t to me. F*ck the Drama King, my name is Keith, man. Respect comes first. If a ni**a disrespect me, he gets the sh*t beat out of him right there.” :banderas:

In the end, the rest of the awards were given out at the after party. Although this award show was scarred by slight beefs and lack of organization, hip-hop heads still appreciate its recognition of those that bring hip-hop to all those on the streets

Other than the clue and slay radio arguments have there been interviews about this?

I remember Ralph McDaniels showed the footage of Slay slapping dude on Video Music Box back then. I've been trying to find it since.

What year did Smack DVD come out? That footage Ralph aired was like the pre-cursor to the DVD beef era. It's interesting that Ralph aired any of it at all. He must have thought it was funny too.

Back then spots like 125th Street, Jamaica Ave, Fulton St etc. felt like big candy stores. They had the hip-hop DVDs, the mixtapes, oils/shea butter, Black porn DVDs, White tees etc.

Same shyt in metro Detroit. Clothing stores (puffer reds, mr. Alan's) would have all that but the porn lol.

I was a mixtape (pause tape really) Dj and that shyt literally bought all my books in college and spring break money.

Me and the (now) owner of a clothing store in Ann arbor, mi were rivals and he I think either owned or had investment in mixtapesusa.com, and he flooded me out of shelf space at stores :heh: we had heat but we're great friends now. It was a dope era for real.

Nothing hyped me up better than breaking a new song to my people

Above the fray.

Watched it, and loaned out the tape I made of it.

Remember two things

Uncle Ralph was interviewing some guys from Far Rockaway, they were talking CASH shyt about tough/gully/gunplay etc etc.

Their man got slapped, and they looked scared as if they had just seen a ghost.
