Do you see any Mazda Protege or Honda Civics in that price range? You want something that is reliable?
For $5,000, I wouldn't look at Volvo's.
Yeah, Honda, Toyota/Scion, Nissan, Mazda are better in reliability when you are shopping for a compact car.Figured u might say that..so it's cars like Camry, Accord, Protege, Civic that are top of the heap.

Saturns with the continuous variable transmission like in the VUE small-SUV had issues.Yeah..I've heard praise for Honda all my adult life..Saturns last a long time too.

I had a Mazda Protege that ran for years. I did all the maintenance and repairs. No major problems in 8 years that I couldn't repair. That 'hoe was solid. I did bring it to a dealership when it came to changing the timing belt. That was it.Not those..the SL 1 line last a long time. The VUE line is a much newer vehicle. I had an 94 SL1 that didn't have one issue for like 16 months back in 2005.

I also brought the wheels to a tire shop when I had to replace the tires.
I hate buying tires. I have a long commute and I go through tires like Wesley Pipes goes through 'hoes. Almost a set of tires a year. I buy tires from Discount Tires, then have them mounted at a local tire shop.U have an advantage over me though because you're mechanically inclined. I don't even like changing tires, man. AAA is for that. I'll check for trans and oil fluid levels..Leaks since I had to get a rebuilt transmission once but that's it.
I know some guys who sells great tires for like just 30 a pop and they LAST and don't ever give me issues compared to the dealer wanting me to pay 600 for 4 new ones. I laughed right in his face...told little man Str8 up "There ain't a chance in hell I'm paying anyone 600 dollars for some damn tires".
What I do is look on autotrader.com to see listings of cars I am interested. I can compare private seller's prices with dealership and used car prices for the same model.Yeah I drive 30 mins to get to work...and I can't stand tire issues in cold weather.
