Keith Law Mock Draft 3.0 ESPN INSIDER:

MLB Mock Draft 3.0
By Keith Law
ESPN Insider

There hasn't been a ton of change at the top since my mock draft from Friday, but we did see one player -- prep right-hander Phil Bickford -- jump from off of the board into the top 10.

Below is my best projection for the top 33 picks in the draft -- the formal first round, plus the six compensatory picks that teams received for losing free agents who received qualifying offers this offseason. I'll have one more mock draft, to be unveiled Thursday morning, before the MLB draft Thursday evening.

Other recent content: For mock draft 2.0, click here. For my first mock draft, click here. For a complete look at my ranking of the top 100 draft prospects, click here.)

1 Colin MoranPOS: 3BB/T: R/RHT: 6-3WT: 215School: North Carolina
Analysis: The only change from what I wrote last week is that Kris Bryant is still alive to be this pick, with both Jonathan Gray and Mark Appel still options. I do not believe the Astros will make a final decision until Wednesday or Thursday; they didn't settle on Carlos Correa at No. 1 overall until a few minutes before the actual pick last year.

2 Mark AppelPOS: RHPHT: 6-5WT: 215School: Stanford
Analysis: Appel, Gray, or Kris Bryant here; I do think they'll take an arm, but Bryant is an outside possibility here, because right-handed power like his is hard to come by. Like Houston, the Cubs do not appear to have settled on a specific order of candidates.

3 Kris BryantPOS: 3B/OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-5WT: 215School: San Diego
Analysis: This also could be Gray, or Moran, or maybe Austin Meadows, although I don't foresee a scenario where they get to Meadows on their preference list. He's been a predraft workout phenom in the past week, though.

4 Jonathan GrayPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 239School: Oklahoma
Analysis: If Appel, Gray, and Bryant go 1-2-3 in some order, this would be Kohl Stewart or Reese McGuire, the latter coming in below slot (allowing them to save money toward future picks).

5 Braden ShipleyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: Nevada
Analysis: The Indians would love to get Moran or Bryant, but it seems unlikely they'll get Moran and unthinkable that they'd get Bryant. Clint Frazier is the other hot name here; GM Chris Antonetti flew to meet him last week.

6 Austin MeadowsPOS: OFB/T: L/LHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Grayson (Ga.) HS
Analysis: Other names in the mix here are Shipley, Hunter Renfroe, and DJ Peterson.

They'll take Bryant or Moran, while also giving strong consideration to Meadows, Frazier, Stewart, Ryne Stanek and possibly Alex Gonzalez.

7 Ryne StanekPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 190School: Arkansas
Analysis: The Red Sox are still wide open -- Meadows is high on their board (over Frazier), as are Renfroe, Peterson, Gonzalez, and possibly Stewart.

8 Phil BickfordPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 185School: Oaks Christian HS (Westlake Village, Calif.)
Analysis: I'm having a hard time with this one myself. Bickford throws hard, and there's a good chance he'll hit 100 mph at some point in the future, but he has a below-average breaking ball right now. If one of the college right-handers gets here, that would change the pick, but there's a strong industry sentiment as of Sunday night that Bickford -- who is getting a lot of attention after striking out 17 straight batters Saturday -- goes here.

9 Reese McGuirePOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Kentwood HS (Kent, Wash.)
Analysis: I've also heard them eyeing Peterson, Frazier, and Trey Ball. Because the Pirates have the No. 14 pick as well, they have a fairly large bonus pool and are in good position to do something creative with lefty Sean Manaea, who looked like a top-five pick heading into the year (and will command top-five money), but whose season ended early due to a hip injury.

Note: A compensation pick for failing to sign Mark Appel with No. 8 overall pick in 2012.

10 Trey BallPOS: LHP/OFHT: 6-6WT: 180School: New Castle (Ind.) HS
Analysis: I've only heard Ball, McGuire, and J.P. Crawford, with a slight chance they'd go for Bickford.

11 Dominic SmithPOS: 1BB/T: L/LHT: 6-0WT: 195School: Serra HS (Gardena, Calif.)
Analysis: Mostly hearing Smith and Peterson here, with a little interest in Crawford.

12 DJ PetersonPOS: 3B/1BB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 205School: New Mexico
Analysis: They've honed in on a group that includes Peterson, Renfroe, Smith, Crawford, and Bickford.

13 Clint FrazierPOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Loganville (Ga.) HS
Analysis: They seem to be interested in a bit of everything: Frazier (high school bat), Bickford (high school pitcher), Renfroe (college bat), and Gonzalez (college arm).

14 Hunter RenfroePOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 216School: Mississippi State
Analysis: They are just hoping someone they like at No. 9 is still available at 14.

15 Alex GonzalezPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Oral Roberts
Analysis: Still hearing them with Renfroe, Aaron Judge, and now Ian Clarkin. I've also heard them with Aaron Blair with the No. 36 pick in Competitive Balance Round A.

16 Kohl StewartPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: St. Pius X (Houston)
Analysis: Their kind of guy, although it's unclear to me whether Stewart -- who has a QB scholarship from Texas A&M -- is signable here, as I don't know his price tag. If he doesn't go No. 4 or 7, however, he doesn't have a ton of landing spots, despite his enormous talent. Other names I've heard with the Phillies include Devin Williams, Bickford, Clarkin, and another surprise candidate, Austin Wilson.

17 Tim AndersonPOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 180School: East Central CC
Analysis: The team that spent a 2003 first-round pick on Brian Anderson is also on Chris Anderson, Louie Anderson, Laurie Anderson, and Aaron Judge.

18 J.P. CrawfordPOS: SSB/T: L/RHT: 6-2WT: 175School: Lakewood (Calif.) HS
Analysis: I've also heard them on Tim Anderson, Smith, Jonathan Crawford, and possibly a college bat if the right one gets here.

19 Devin WilliamsPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 172School: Hazelwood (Mo.) West HS
Analysis: Tim Anderson and Travis Demeritte are also possibilities here. The Cardinals have interest in Ian Clarkin as well, but don't think he'll still be there when they pick again at No. 28.

20 Jonathon CrawfordPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Florida
Analysis: Hearing them linked to power arms -- I know you're shocked, settle down -- which could include Williams or Chris Anderson as well.

21 Nick CiuffoPOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 200School: Lexington (S.C.) HS
Analysis: I've had them with Ciuffo for three straight mocks, mostly because the industry is reasonably convinced he's their guy at this pick.

22 Chris AndersonPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 225School: Jacksonville
Analysis: I had them taking Josh Hart last time around, and that interest is still there, as is the potential to take Alex Balog or Blair at 37.

23 Travis DemerittePOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 195School: Winder-Barrow HS (Winder, Ga.)
Analysis: It's mostly high school/JC kids being linked to Texas, including Tim Anderson and Hart as well.

24 Hunter HarveyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 175School: Bandys HS (Catawba, N.C.)
Analysis: Also hearing prep pitcher Rob Kaminsky and Kyle Serrano here, although I have to think there are some college bats (like Judge or Eric Jagielo) who'd be appealing.

25 Matt KrookPOS: LHPHT: 6-2WT: 190School: St. Ignatius Prep (Hillsborough, Calif.)
Analysis: Also hearing Clarkin in this mix. There's a big popup name here: Florida prep shortstop Christian Arroyo.

26 Billy McKinneyPOS: OFB/T: L/LHT: 6-2WT: 195School: Plano (Texas) West HS
Analysis: I've also heard them with Cody Reed, Hunter Green, and Bickford -- who no longer has any realistic chance to drop this far and likely would demand a bonus well above the recommended number for this pick.

27 Jon DenneyPOS: CB/T: R/RHT: 6-2WT: 205School: Yukon (Okla.) HS
Analysis: Also hearing Wil Crowe with them, perhaps for pick No. 38.

28 Ian ClarkinPOS: LHPHT: 6-2WT: 190School: Madison HS (San Diego)
Analysis: Same names as at No. 19, with the hope one of them -- such as Clarkin -- reaches them here.

Note: This pick is compensation for Kyle Lohse signing with the Brewers.

29 Hunter DozierPOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-4WT: 220School: Stephen F. Austin
Analysis: They're also one of the teams on Cody Reed.

Note: This pick is compensation for B.J. Upton signing with the Braves.

30 Cody ReedPOS: LHPHT: 6-5WT: 220School: Northwest Mississippi CC
Analysis: They could also go with Hunter Green, whom I have going one pick after this.

Note: This pick is compensation for Josh Hamilton signing with the Angels.

31 Hunter GreenPOS: LHPHT: 6-5WT: 220School: Warren East HS (Bowling Green, Ky.)
Analysis: I think some of the names they hoped would get here are going well ahead of them.

Note: This pick is compensation for Michael Bourn signing with the Indians.

32 Eric JagieloPOS: 3BB/T: L/RHT: 6-3WT: 215School: Notre Dame
Analysis: Jagielo could go before this, but I think these back-to-back picks represent his floor.

Note: This pick is compensation for Nick Swisher signing with the Indians.

33 Kyle SerranoPOS: RHPHT: 6-0WT: 185School: Farragut (Tenn.) HS
Analysis: To be honest, the Yankees appear to be on almost everybody, because with three picks in the first round, they need to scout almost everybody. I've linked them to Wilson and Dustin Peterson in the past, both of whom still are possibilities.

Note: This pick is compensation for Rafael Soriano signing with the Nationals.

Keith Law Top 25 Prospects ESPN Insider

With the Rule 4 draft less than a month away, I've expanded my ranking of the top prospects from 50 to 100 players. (For the previous version of my draft prospect rankings, click here.)

This is not a projection or mock draft -- I'll do my first of those next week -- but a ranking by talent and upside based on my own scouting of players (live and off video) and conversations with scouts from all over the country.

As with my ranking of the top 100 pro prospects, I use the 20-80 grading scale in these comments to avoid overuse of the terms "average" and "above average" across the 100 player comments. On that scale, a grade of 50 equals major league average, 55 is above average, 60 is plus, 45 is fringy or below average and so on.

Now, on to the rankings.

1 Mark AppelPOS: RHPHT: 6-5WT: 215School: Stanford
Analysis: Appel is clearly the draft's top talent, offering top-of-the-rotation stuff, great command and a more aggressive approach this year on the mound.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 1

2 Jonathan GrayPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 239School: Oklahoma
Analysis: Gray might have better pure stuff than Appel, touching 100 mph regularly with a plus slider and a strong, durable body, but he offers less certainty due to a shorter track record and lesser command.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 2

3 Kris BryantPOS: 3B/OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-5WT: 215School: San Diego
Analysis: Bryant has huge raw power, leading Division I in homers by six and leading in walks. The main question is whether he'll stay at third or, more likely, end up in right.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 6

4 Austin MeadowsPOS: OFB/T: L/LHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Grayson (Ga.) HS
Analysis: Meadows hasn't performed up to the level of his tools, but he has the highest upside of any of the prep bats in this draft, with a huge build and the potential to contribute on offense and defense.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 3

5 Kohl StewartPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: St. Pius X (Houston)
Analysis: Stewart is committed to Texas A&M to play quarterback but has more promise on the diamond as a four-pitch guy who can hit 97 mph and has a plus slider.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 5

6 Braden ShipleyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: Nevada
Analysis: Shipley is a converted position player, now running it up to 97 mph with his fastball to go with a plus changeup, but hasn't missed as many bats as he should, perhaps because Nevada's coaches don't call his curveball often enough.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 7

7 Clint FrazierPOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Loganville (Ga.) HS
Analysis: Frazier has the best bat speed in this draft -- maybe the best I've seen on an amateur prospect -- overcoming concerns about his size (he's generously listed at 6-foot-1) and lack of foot speed.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 8

8 Sean ManaeaPOS: LHPHT: 6-5WT: 235School: Indiana State
Analysis: The draft's top left-handed pitching prospect is in a little bit of limbo after hip soreness caused him to miss a start, followed by a rough four-inning outing last weekend. He'll need to show he's healthy to remain in the top 10.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 4

9 Colin MoranPOS: 3BHT: 6-3WT: 215School: North Carolina
Analysis: The best pure bat in the college ranks, Moran has a stunning four walks for every strikeout this year but might end up moving to first base.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 12

10 Dominic SmithPOS: 1BB/T: L/LHT: 6-0WT: 195School: Serra HS (Gardena, Calif.)
Analysis: When Smith is on, he has a smooth left-handed swing that generates hard contact and power, and he provides plus defense at first.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 17

11 Hunter RenfroePOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 216School: Mississippi State
Analysis: Renfroe has the best package of tools among college bats, lacking the polish of Moran or Bryant but with better foot speed and more value on defense.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 19

12 J.P. CrawfordPOS: SSB/T: L/RHT: 6-2WT: 175School: Lakewood (Calif.) HS
Analysis: Crawford is the one true, no-doubt shortstop in this draft class, putting him in top-10 consideration even though he's probably four or five years from the big leagues.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 10

13 Ryne StanekPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 190School: Arkansas
Analysis: Stanek keeps sliding, just slightly, as his stuff is solid but his performances don't measure up; questionable pitch-calling and confusion between his two breaking balls have been issues for him.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 9

14 Trey BallPOS: LHP/OFHT: 6-6WT: 180School: New Castle (Ind.) HS
Analysis: Ball could be drafted as a high-ceiling right fielder or as a left-handed pitcher who's consistently up to 94 mph already, either of which should be enough to put him in the top 20 picks.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 14

15 Austin WilsonPOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-5WT: 245School: Stanford
Analysis: Wilson has easy plus power, but a stress reaction above his elbow kept him out for almost six weeks and he still doesn't appear to be 100 percent, hampering his ability to make contact right now.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 11

16 Alex GonzalezPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Oral Roberts
Analysis: Gonzalez, who goes by Chi-Chi, keeps climbing the board, showing four pitches with a plus cutter and great ability to generate ground balls.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 33

17 Aaron JudgePOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-7WT: 255School: Fresno State
Analysis: When scouts reach for "Blake Griffin" when they need a physical comparable, you know you're a big baseball player. Judge has raw power but a somewhat short swing that generates more contact than big flies in games.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 18

18 Nick CiuffoPOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 200School: Lexington (S.C.) HS
Analysis: The best receiver among prep catchers in this draft class, Ciuffo has power but needs help with his arm stroke and his approach.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 22

19 Reese McGuirePOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Kentwood HS (Kent, Wash.)
Analysis: The best-throwing catcher in this draft class, McGuire has improved his receiving but still faces questions about his hit and power tools.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO | PREVIOUS RANK: 20

20 Devin WilliamsPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 172School: Hazelwood West HS (Hazelwood, Mo.)
Analysis: The St. Louis-area high school right-hander came out strongly from the start of his season with plus velocity and strong secondary offerings.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 27

21 Kyle SerranoPOS: RHPHT: 6-0WT: 185School: Farragut (Tenn.) HS
Analysis: The son of Tennessee coach Dave Serrano, Kyle has been flashing plus velocity with an out-pitch curveball, pushing himself into the first round.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 25

22 Jon DenneyPOS: CB/T: R/RHT: 6-2WT: 205School: Yukon (Okla.) HS
Analysis: Denney came into the year as a possible top-10 pick, an offensive catcher with big-time thump, but a disappointing showing on a March trip to Arizona and questions about his glove have dropped him toward the back of the round.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 15

23 Marco GonzalesPOS: LHPHT: 6-1WT: 185School: Gonzaga
Analysis: Gonzales lacks the upside of the other college starters on this list, but he's about as safe a pick as you can make, a great athlete with two advanced secondary pitches to make up for a fastball that rarely tops 91 mph.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 23

24 Hunter HarveyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 175School: Bandys HS (Catawba, N.C.)
Analysis: Son of former big leaguer Bryan Harvey, Hunter is very projectable, up to 93 mph already with feel for a curveball, and with a strong desire to go pro rather than heading for college.

SCOUTING REPORT | PREVIOUS RANK: 31

25 Chris AndersonPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 225School: Jacksonville
Analysis: The Jacksonville right-hander hasn't kept up his dominance from early in the season, when he was hitting 96 mph to go with a plus slider, perhaps due to heavy usage. He still has the size and above-average velocity to go in the late first round to a team hoping proper workload management gets him back to that higher level.

I really, really want Gray. I'd be OK with Appel.

But we better take Bryant if the arms are gone.

I'm sure we'll fukk it up though

That's why I'm hoping one of the top 2 falls.

That said, drafting for "need" in baseball is dumb. Take the best player available.

Keith Law ESPN Insider on Gray situation:

MLB teams learned a few days ago that Oklahoma right-hander Jonathan Gray tested positive for the banned stimulant Adderall during the league's mandatory drug testing for the top 200 prospects in each draft class (as determined by MLB's internal scouting bureau). Because many current big leaguers use the drug after gaining therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) from the league, Gray's test results aren't likely to significantly affect his draft stock, although there could be some subtle ripple effects.

Although Adderall is best known as a drug used to treat ADHD, it's actually an amphetamine -- two amphetamine salts combined in one pill. Using “greenies” without a prescription has been a federal crime since 1970 and has been banned by baseball since 2005, but in a 2003 interview Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn estimated that half of then-current big leaguers were using amphetamines. The drug's many off-label uses include increasing wakefulness and focus and facilitating weight loss.

Gray, who I have going No. 4 to the Twins in my latest mock draft, did improve his conditioning substantially for the 2013 season, crediting improved nutrition and increased weight training; his velocity was already in the mid-90s before his junior year, with his command improving this spring along with the bite on his slider. Teams I've spoken with indicated they're not seriously troubled by the positive test result, although they felt it indicated that his judgment was poor. It also appears that his bonus expectations will be lower now that he has the unfavorable result on his scouting bureau medical report.

The perverse incentives of the current draft bonus system -- teams incur huge penalties if they exceed their spending allotment -- could mean that Gray is now more likely to go first overall than he was before the test result became known. If the Astros (or any other teams) believe that his ability and performance are in no way connected to his Adderall use, they could get the same player at a lower bonus figure, thus saving more money to spend on later picks. One source indicated to me that he thinks Gray would sign for a "huge" discount if drafted at or near the top, although that speculation was not attached to specific dollar amounts.

On the other hand, other players in the top 10 may look better by comparison simply because they don't have the same red flag on their medicals, something that those players' advisers will probably broach in any conversations with teams leading up to Thursday's first round.

In the ocean where the sharks be at
Is Kris Bryant really out there beasting? Is he one of them quick stint in the minors then called up within a year type nikkas? Cubs do need pitching, but Shark a beast and damn near our entire draft last year was pitching so if one or two of them nikkas become legit, along wit Shark, we might be able to risk the power bat:manny:

Appel or Byant and Im good.

He'll be in the big leagues quick like bryce harper unless he can't hit minor league pitching he had a rough weekend at the college world series.Who is shark?

That appell kid is a projected 1-2 starter he'll be in the big leagues pretty quick too

final mock from keith law:

This feels more like a scenario to me than a projection -- if Houston takes someone else at No. 1, then most of the picks succeeding it will change as well, and as of early Thursday it did not appear that the Astros had decided on their selection.

As of now, this is my best projection for the top 33 picks in the draft -- the formal first round, plus the six compensatory picks that teams received for losing free agents who received qualifying offers this offseason. I'll add relevant info and buzz as it comes in throughout the day.

Other recent content: For mock draft 3.0, click here. Version 2.0 can be found here. For my first mock draft, click here. And here is my ranking of the top 100 draft prospects.

1Mark AppelPOS: RHPHT: 6-5WT: 215School: Stanford
Analysis: So the last rumor of the night Wednesday … or the small hours of Thursday morning, had the Astros trying to nail down a price from Appel so they could take him with the first pick and still ensure that they had enough savings to exceed MLB's bonus recommendations with picks 40 and 74. They could still take Colin Moran, or Jonathan Gray, or (least likely) Kris Bryant.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
2Jonathan GrayPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 239School: Oklahoma
Analysis: Appel or Gray here, with money probably a major variable as the Cubs seem to view the two guys as very close. They may not have a choice if the Astros take one of the two, in which case Chicago will take the other.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
3Kris BryantPOS: 3B/OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-5WT: 215School: San Diego
Analysis: The Rockies have been linked to Bryant all spring. Rumor of the week has the Rockies shocking everyone here with Dominic Smith, although I get the sense that they like Smith a lot but not with this pick.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
4Kohl StewartPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: St. Pius X (Houston)
Analysis: They have considered Reese McGuire, and I think they'd take Gray or Appel if either one got here, assuming they knew either player would sign.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
5Colin MoranPOS: 3BB/T: L/RHT: 6-3WT: 215School: North Carolina
Analysis: They'd take any of the four college guys I have going in the top five, with Clint Frazier as the backup option if all four are gone.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
6Braden ShipleyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 190School: Nevada
Analysis: I'm also hearing them linked to Austin Meadows and Hunter Renfroe.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
7Austin MeadowsPOS: OFB/T: L/LHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Grayson (Ga.) HS
Analysis: They'd love Moran or Bryant, but I can't make either of those things work in a realistic scenario. Also hearing them with Stewart, Frazier and Ryne Stanek, as well as an outside shot at a deal with Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez, although that seems to be dead.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
8Trey BallPOS: LHP/OFHT: 6-6WT: 180School: New Castle (Ind.) HS
Analysis: Stewart doesn't get past here. Ball and Shipley are their choices over Phil Bickford, who I had them taking in my last mock and is still a consideration here, but he put out such a huge bonus demand this week that some teams are scared off.

SCOUTING REPORT
9Reese McGuirePOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Kentwood HS (Kent, Wash.)
Analysis: This one has seemed locked in for a while. If the Twins do end up taking McGuire, I'd guess D.J. Peterson here, over guys like Dominic Smith, Hunter Renfroe, and Clint Frazier.

Note: A compensation pick for failing to sign Mark Appel with No. 8 overall pick in 2012.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
10J.P. CrawfordPOS: SSB/T: L/RHT: 6-2WT: 175School: Lakewood (Calif.) HS
Analysis: Hearing them with Ball, McGuire, and Crawford, but not Meadows and Frazier. Also heard one rumor they'd take Bickford and tell him to take less money or go to school.

SCOUTING REPORT
11DJ PetersonPOS: 3B/1BB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 205School: New Mexico
Analysis: Have heard them on Peterson or Smith for weeks now. Gonzalez is another name that has gained some traction here.

SCOUTING REPORT
12Hunter RenfroePOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 216School: Mississippi State
Analysis: Seattle is being linked to a slew of names here, including Peterson, Bickford, and Crawford.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
13Clint FrazierPOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 190School: Loganville (Ga.) HS
Analysis: Other possibilities here include Renfroe, Gonzalez and Hunter Dozier, who has moved up draft boards with a strong spring at Stephen F. Austin. Dozier is also helped by the fact that this draft is bereft of college shortstops, and he is probably the best one.

Update (11:50 a.m. ET): Hearing that Renfroe is their clear second choice if Frazier is off the board.

14Dominic SmithPOS: 1BB/T: L/LHT: 6-0WT: 195School: Serra HS (Gardena, Calif.)
Analysis: Gonzalez is also in play here, as well as the other names I mentioned at No. 9 should they fall this far.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
15Alex GonzalezPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Oral Roberts
Analysis: If Renfroe or Smith are still on the board, it's unlikely they'll get past here. Another name I've heard is Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge, who is built like a defensive end and has one of the more unique scouting profiles you will ever see.

SCOUTING REPORT
16Austin WilsonPOS: OFB/T: R/RHT: 6-5WT: 245School: Stanford
Analysis: I've heard them on a weird mix of players, but they seem to be locked in on bats. They're one of the teams linked to J.P. Crawford, and I've heard them connected to Judge, probably because they love high-upside athletic players even if their probability is low.

SCOUTING REPORT
17Chris AndersonPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 225School: Jacksonville
Analysis: Other possibilities here include Gonzalez and juco shortstop Tim Anderson.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
18Ryne StanekPOS: RHPHT: 6-4WT: 190School: Arkansas
Analysis: Heard a number of names here, including Nick Ciuffo, Hunter Harvey, Eric Jagielo and Gonzalez. Stanek was seen as a possible top-five pick coming into the spring, so some might see this as great value here.

SCOUTING REPORT
19Tim AndersonPOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 180School: East Central CC
Analysis: Hearing they're more likely to go college than prep here.

SCOUTING REPORT
20Jonathon CrawfordPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 200School: Florida
Analysis: Heard them linked to a lot of power arms -- a profile Detroit loves -- but not to anyone specific other than Crawford.

SCOUTING REPORT
21Nick CiuffoPOS: CB/T: L/RHT: 6-1WT: 200School: Lexington (S.C.) HS
Analysis: Ciuffo seems to be the one name they'd really love to get here, with Dozier, Jagielo and Devin Williams other possibilities.

SCOUTING REPORT | VIDEO
22Hunter HarveyPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 175School: Bandys HS (Catawba, N.C.)
Analysis: I've also heard them with Travis Demeritte, Josh Hart, and Alex Balog (but probably at pick No. 37 in competitive balance round A).

SCOUTING REPORT
23Travis DemerittePOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-1WT: 195School: Winder-Barrow HS (Winder, Ga.)
Analysis: If the Cardinals really do go college at 19, that probably means Demerritte gets here, and Texas has been linked to him for a while.

SCOUTING REPORT
24Rob KaminskyPOS: LHPHT: 6-0WT: 190School: St. Joseph HS (Montvale, N.J.)
Analysis: Oakland has been linked to Hunter Harvey as well.

SCOUTING REPORT
25Matt KrookPOS: LHPHT: 6-2WT: 190School: St. Ignatius Prep (Hillsborough, Calif.)
Analysis: Linked to a lot of prep arms, with Krook earning particular attention from their pitching guru, dikk Tidrow, as well as Ian Clarkin.

SCOUTING REPORT
26Eric JagieloPOS: 3BB/T: L/RHT: 6-3WT: 215School: Notre Dame
Analysis: Hearing they will go college here, with Jagielo edging out Wilson on their board.

SCOUTING REPORT
27Jon DenneyPOS: CB/T: R/RHT: 6-2WT: 205School: Yukon (Okla.) HS
Analysis: Also heard them with Billy McKinney and Wil Crowe, the latter probably in the comp round (No. 38 overall pick).

SCOUTING REPORT
28Devin WilliamsPOS: RHPHT: 6-3WT: 172School: Hazelwood (Mo.) West HS
Analysis: Williams is a local kid, which makes him an obvious fit. I've also heard them with Ian Clarkin here.

Note: This pick is compensation for Kyle Lohse signing with the Brewers.

SCOUTING REPORT
29Hunter DozierPOS: SSB/T: R/RHT: 6-4WT: 220School: Stephen F. Austin
Analysis: Other targets are the guys I mentioned at No. 21: Dozier, Jagielo and Williams.

Note: This pick is compensation for B.J. Upton signing with the Braves.

SCOUTING REPORT
30Kyle SerranoPOS: RHPHT: 6-0WT: 185School: Farragut (Tenn.) HS
Analysis: If I had to say there was one pick I knew the least about, it would be this one. I've heard names such as Hunter Green, Hart and Clarkin, but don't feel like any of them was a particularly strong link.

Note: This pick is compensation for Josh Hamilton signing with the Angels.

SCOUTING REPORT
31Hunter GreenPOS: LHPHT: 6-5WT: 220School: Warren East HS (Bowling Green, Ky.)
Analysis: They'd love Krook but he likely won't get here. Cal catcher Andrew Knapp is also in play.

Note: This pick is compensation for Michael Bourn signing with the Indians.

SCOUTING REPORT
32Billy McKinneyPOS: OFB/T: L/LHT: 6-2WT: 195School: Plano (Texas) West HS
Analysis: Have also heard them on Kaminsky, Andrew Thurman (although that was a little while ago), Dustin Peterson and Cody Reed, as well as …

Note: This pick is compensation for Nick Swisher signing with the Indians.

SCOUTING REPORT
33Ian ClarkinPOS: LHPHT: 6-2WT: 190School: Madison HS (San Diego)
Analysis: Probably worth mentioning that the last time they picked down here in 2010, they shocked everyone by taking prep shortstop Cito Culver, who was considered a pretty big reach.

Note: This pick is compensation for Rafael Soriano signing with the Nationals.
