I literally spent all my life in NYC public schools. The problem is a combination of lack of resources mixed with black kids by and large not taking education seriously. I've taken that test myself, if you study in advanced it's not that hard.

I'm going to reveal a lot about myself. I went to Brooklyn Tech Class of 1998. My year, blacks were the BIGGEST demographic. Rougly 37% versus 36% Asian.

It's not the test, guys. The test isn't racist. It doesn't explain such a low number today.

When I grew up there was a gifted track in every public school in NYC. I didn't get into gifted until 4th grade I remember very clearly how big of a difference it was. The biggest thing was the kids in the classroom. They actually wanted to learn and were able to listen. In the grades previous, the teachers spent most of their time telling everyone to shut up, get out of the jacket closet, sit down, get your books out. "what do you mean you lost your book?!". Pretty much the kids were not classroom learners. Having a gifted track in every school allowed the school to put the capable, advanced kids in an environment to actually learn and grow.

When I was in BK Tech, most of the kids that in were products of Gifted classes (duh). At the same time I was in HS, GW Bush passed "No Child Left Behind" which pretty much killed gifted tracks. They were going to mix gifted students with regular students to lift the overall school quality so kids don't get left behind. Now a couple of generations later, urban kids can't get into the Specialized HS anymore. But they wanna say the test is racist. NOOOOO. The students aren't good enough. Blame the students? NOOOO. It was a shytty policy. You have to acknowledge that not all students learn at the same pace. You have to stay out of school policy and let the schools and principals do their job and teach the kids the best they can.

Last year they got rid of Gifted school and want to start busing kids. The idea is to mixed gifted school kids with regular school kids to lift the overall quality of schools. LOLLL.. Let's see what happens in 1 generation. I'll tell you what will happen: the politicians will hit their numbers. There will be more blacks in what USED to be good schools but they will do poorly in SATs, poorly in College and come out poorly educated and not very employable. They will do another study and say the system has become more racist. Right now, when they water down the schools, all the families that value education are leaving the public school system. These are the families you want in the schools. Reinstate gifted for ALL schools. All schools have their group of really talented advanced kids. Let them learn to their potential and in a generation, that group will be in the Specialized Schools.

@pez
Good post. There are a number of Tech alumni on the forum and they've said similar comments.
Having gone through the process, and taken the same test, you guys have a unique insight into the issue.

@pez
You speaking facts
My parents tried getting me in Poly Prep, specialized HS….but I performed poorly on those tests(didn’t study or prepare for them)

Still in the gifted program @ IS109 then @ Cardozo went from excellent student to average student because I wanted to get the fukk out…prepped for the SAT 2 in advanced

Most HS students know none of that shyt matters if you’re not on the scholarship track.

I was a beneficiary of the gifted programs. I took the specialized test and didn't study for it. Got into Tech to my surprise. Even in my 8th grade class, I think I was the only one who was checking for the test. The test was on a Saturday morning, and I heard from some classmates that they (and their parents) wasn't trying to wake up early on a Saturday for a HS test. My pops made sure I was there on time. I had no idea about any prep for the test, and when I heard some students there talking about how they had studied for the test, I was thinking there was no way I could pass... I thought about just putting any answer down and giving up, but then I said, "well I'm here, I may as well do the best I can". Still, when I found out I had gotten in, I was like :ohhh:

The Asian kids study for this test years in advance and also take prep classes for it. That was the case when I took this test 30 years ago, I'm sure they are even more rigorous about it now. Like many other black kids, I didn't take this test seriously or even study.

All that test is racist crap is bogus and insulting to brehs in reality. People duck talking about the real problem to hide behind lies.

You nailed it. Kids have to come willing and ready to learn. Education is a pursuit pure and simple. Kids didn't get dumber and test didn't get racist. The excuses are embarrassing and fail to address the issue.
