US House drops effort to impeach Trump over Iran strikes

The House has voted overwhelmingly to set aside an effort to impeach President Trump on a sole charge of abuse of power for launching military strikes on Iran without congressional authorisation.

The Associated Press news agency reports that the attempt brought to the House by Democrat Al Green of Texas brought little debate and also split his party, many of whom joined with their Republican colleagues to vote down the impeachment attempt.

Speaking in advance of the vote, Green said he believed the US was at the “crossroads of democracy and autocracy”.

“I do this because no one person should have the power to take over 300 million people to war without consulting with the Congress of the United States of America,” Green said.
“I do this because I understand that the Constitution is going to be meaningful or it’s going to be meaningless,” he said.

Most Democrats joined the Republican majority to shelve the impeachment attempt with a vote tally of 344 to 79.

Trump lashed out earlier on Tuesday at Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York for suggesting his military action against Iran was an impeachable offence.

House Democrats privately vented their fury Tuesday about what they said is a "premature" and "unhelpful" vote on impeaching President Trump for his strikes on Iran.
Why it matters: Impeachment has dogged Democrats since Trump came back into office, with Tuesday's vote finally forcing them to go on the record after half a year of internal turmoil.

  • The outcome: 128 Democrats sided with House Republicans to block Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) from bringing a Trump impeachment vote, including most of Democratic leadership.
  • Just 79 House Democrats — mostly progressives in safe districts — stood with Green on trying to force the vote.
What we're hearing: "A completely unserious and selfish move," one House Democrat told Axios on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly about a colleague.
  • Another House Democrat said there is "a lot" of anger about the vote — adding, "I think you heard it from leadership today, they're frustrated."
  • "Most people think it's unhelpful," a third House Democrat told Axios.
  • Several lawmakers noted that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) voted against the resolution, as did House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
State of play: Green forced a sudden vote on impeaching Trump for ordering strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran over the weekend without getting authorization from Congress.
  • The unilateral strikes have been a major source of tension between congressional Democrats and the administration, though only a handful — including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) — have said they constitute grounds for impeachment.

Between the lines: Many Democrats groaned that the vote forces them to choose between grassroots activists clamoring for impeachment and the broader, more moderate electorate.
    • "It puts people in a difficult situation," a fourth House Democrat told Axios.
    • A fifth fumed: "There are a lot of other things we should be focused on right now."

Impeaching trump ain’t gonna do a damn thing. Didn’t this MF get impeached multiple times last term?
It would just create a distraction Trump could hide behind. He is a fukking idiot and every day more and more people realize it because he cant distract them by saying the democrats are doing something to stop him.

if the democrats actually have control of the house and senate I think they go for it again.

Said this in the Israel/Iran thread, but impeaching does no good coming from Dems. shyt is just another tool Trump and MAGA can use against the Dems when it ultimately fails. An impeachment would need to come from Republicans.

Should he be impeached? Absolutely. Will he? Nope. And I think after two failed attempts, Dems figure this is not the hill to die on because it will become the talk of the media. While they should stand on principle, principles ain't winning shyt or Trump would never have made it to the white house again.

I'm glad Rep. Green is doing the right thing but i'm also not sweating Dems voting now in houses they don't run. We talk all the time about symbolism and this would be the definition of it. My major issue with the no votes isn't that this potential blunder was not voted for in principle, but people like Jeffries and Pelosi are bought-and-paid for folks who know the money gonna get funny trying to impeach him without the people absolutely clamoring for it.

As I said before, getting Trump out is going to require bipartisan support and thats not happening until politicians are getting walked up on in the streets for not taking out the trash. Until then...meh.
