Estrada-Chocolatito II Heading To Dallas; McCaskill-Braekhus II, Kyoguchi-Aragon Vega Added To Bill
By Jake Donovan

Published On Fri Jan 22, 2021, 01:41 PM EST

The most anticipated fight of the 1st quarter now has a home and a strong undercard in tow.

The long-awaited rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez will headline a loaded March 13 fight card to take place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The venue was confirmed on Friday by Matchroom Boxing, who also announced two fights added to the card which will air live on DAZN.

Also now included on the show is another rematch, as two-division and undisputed welterweight queen Jessica McCaskill once again faces former champ Cecilia Braekhus.

The two will meet seven months after headlining Matchroom’s first U.S.-based card since the pandemic, which took place last August in Tulsa, Oklahoma. McCaskill claimed a competitive 10-round decision to score one of the year’s biggest upsets, ending one of the longest title reigns in boxing history along with Braekhus’ claim to the pound-for-pound throne.

On the male side, Hiroto Kyoguchi makes his U.S. and Matchroom debut as he defends his junior flyweight title versus Axel Aragon Vega (14-3-1).

Kyoguchi (14-0, 9KOs) attempts the third defense of the 108-pound tile he claimed in a 10th round knockout of Hekkie Budler to become a two-division champion in Dec. 2018. The 27-year old from Tokyo has not fought since a 12-round win over Tetsuya Hisada in October 2019. A planned title defense versus Thailand’s Thankongsak Simsri last November was canceled after Kyoguchi tested positive for COVID-19.

Good news followed the bad, as Kyoguchi entered a promotional pact with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and a managerial agreement with Eddy Reynoso.

Aragon Vega enters his second career title fight, coming on the heels of big news of his own. The 20-year old Mexican contender recently signed a promotional agreement with Felix ‘Tutico’ Zabala’s All-Star Boxing, with the two sides having worked together in Aragon Vega’s 10-round win over former title challenger Saul ‘Baby’ Juarez on Telemundo last August.

Headlining the show, Estrada (41-3, 28KOs) and Gonzalez (50-2, 41KOs) collide more than eight years after their memorable Nov. 2012 war, which a then-unbeaten Gonzalez won by 12-round decision in the final defense of his 108-pound title. Championship wins at flyweight and junior bantamweight followed, along with accolades as the sport’s recognized pound-for-pound king.

Gonzalez’s glory days came to a crashing halt following back-to-back losses to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2017, ending his 115-pound title reign. The Nicaraguan legend has since claimed another belt at the weight, stopping unbeaten Kal Yafai in the 9th round of their title clash last February in nearby Frisco, Texas. One title defense has since followed, a 12-round win over perennial Top 10 contender Israel Gonzalez.

Estrada has won titles at flyweight and junior bantamweight, the latter where he is the recognized lineal champion. That distinction came virtue of a 12-round win over Sor Rungvisai in their April 2019 rematch, coming 14 months after dropping a tightly contested decision in their Feb. 2018 championship war.

Estrada has since made two successful defenses, including an off-the-canvas 11th round knockout of Carlos Cuadras in their rematch last October. The bout headlined a DAZN-aired tripleheader from Mexico City which also housed Gonzalez’s aforementioned title defense.

The announcement of the show gives the American Airlines Center its second significant card of 2021. The home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks hosted the first boxing card of the new year, headlined by rising lightweight Ryan Garcia in a breakout 7th round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell. Both fighters hit the deck in their Jan. 2nd interim lightweight title fight which further enhanced Garcia’s growing star status.

“This is a huge night of boxing in Dallas,” said Eddie Hearn, managing director of Matchroom Sport. “Cecilia and Jessica will put it all on the line in their rematch for the undisputed Welterweight title and Hirotu is a fighter that I am excited to see explode onto the big stage under the guidance of his manager Eddy Reynoso and Matchroom.

“With a brilliant main event in the rematch between Estrada and Chocolatito and plenty of young talents to be added to the card, this is an unmissable feast of fights for the fans in Dallas and on DAZN.”

Estrada-Chocolatito II: Raymond Ford, Austin Williams and Otha Jones III Added

Raymond Ford, Austin Williams and Otha Jones III all take a big step-up in their blossoming careers on the undercard of the blockbuster unification rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on Saturday March 13, live worldwide on DAZN.

Ford (8-0 4 KOs) has been in hot form, closing 2020 out with impressive stoppage wins in Florida and Texas and the 21 year old takes on unbeaten New Mexico talent Aaron ‘Angel Baby’ Perez (10-0 6 KOs) over eight rounds.

Williams (7-0 6 KOs) is looking to build on his own stellar 2020 performances where he won all three of his fights via stoppage in Miami, Mexico City and Dallas, and ‘Ammo’ will look to continue that streak in his first eight round bout against the experienced Californian Aaron Coley (16-3-1 7 KOs).

Jones III (5-0-1 2 KOs) battled to a split draw in Mexico City in his last outing in October, and the Ohio starlet will look to brush that off in his first eight round battle against dangerous Texas native Jorge David Castaneda (13-1 11 KOs).

“This is a big night for Ray, Ammo and OJ3,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “All eyes are on Dallas with our mouth-watering World title triple-header, but these boys will be out to steal the show. All three of them are top talents, and now they are moving into the next phase of their careers, taking on tougher tests and stepping up to eight rounders and beyond. The pressure is on to shine, and I am sure they are going to rise to the occasion.”

All five fighters take their spot on a massive night of triple-header World title action, topped by the rematch between Estrada (41-3 28 KOs) and Chocolatito (50-2 41 KOs) with the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine World Flyweight titles on the line.

There’s another case of repeat or revenge as Jessica McCaskill (9-2 3 KOs) defends the undisputed World Welterweight title against Cecilia Brækhus (36-1 9 KOs) and there’s a Matchroom debut on the card for Hiroto Kyoguchi (14-0 9 KOs) as he defends his WBA and Ring Magazine World Light-Flyweight titles against Axel Vega (14-3-1 8 KOs).

Seven-Day Weights: Estrada 118-Pounds, Chocolatito 118.2-Pounds
estrada-chocolatito.jpg

BY JAKE DONOVAN
Published Sat Mar 06, 2021, 04:22 PM EST

All that is left for Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez is to officially make weight on the eve of fight night.

The pair of junior bantamweight title claimants have complied with all pre-fight safety weight checks ahead of their long-anticipated championship rematch. Both boxers were well within the accepted limit seven days out from their March 13 DAZN headliner, which comes with the WBC and WBA 115-pound titles on the line.

Per WBC rules, participants are required to weigh no heavier than 3% above the contracted limit for a sanctioned fight at the seven-day mark. Estrada (41-3, 28KOs) weighed 118 pounds at that point, while Gonzalez (50-2, 41KOs) checked in at 118.2 points. The maximum allowable limit is 119 pounds, rounded up from 3% more than the 115-pound divisional limit.

The gentle weight cuts were on pace from where both boxers were at the 14-day point, where they were required to weigh no heavier than 121 pounds. Estrada was 120 pounds one week ago, while Gonzalez was 120.6 pounds.

Neither boxer has a history of missing weight, nor is It expected to be an issue at Friday’s weigh-in ahead of their rematch which will take place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Estrada will attempt the third defense of his World junior bantamweight championship since claiming the crown in April 2019. The feat came in another celebrated rematch, as the Hermosillo, Mexico native became a two-division champion following a 12-round decision win over Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. Estrada suffered a narrow points loss to the hard-hitting Thai in their Feb. 2018 championship clash before gaining revenge 14 months later.

In his most recent start, Estrada—in yet another rematch—climbed off of the canvas to drop and stop former WBC titlist Carlos Cuadras in the 11th round of their unforgettable thriller last October in Mexico City.

The same show saw Gonzalez make the first defense of the WBA title in a 12-round decision over Israel Gonzalez. The fight came eight months after becoming a two-time 115-pound titlist, with the legendary four-division champ turning back the clock in a 9th round knockout of unbeaten Kal Yafai last February in Frisco, Texas.

For Gonzalez, the win over Yafai was his first at the title level since dethroning Cuadras in their Sept. 2016 WBC 115-pound title fight to become a four-division champ. Gonzalez was also unbeaten and the recognized pound-for-pound king at the time, though 2017 proved disastrous to the Nicaraguan. Back-to-back losses to Sor Rungvisai stripped Gonzalez of his aura of invincibility, more so in the frightening 4th round knockout he suffered in their Sept. 2017 rematch.

Four wins have since followed for Gonzalez, who enters his 20th career major title fight (excluding interim titles). Included among the lot is his 12-round decision win over Estrada in their Nov. 2012 war, which marked the final defense of Gonzalez’s junior flyweight title reign after having previously served as a strawweight titlist. His next title fight wouldn’t come for another 22 months, having established himself as a legitimate flyweight by the time he stopped lineal champion Akira Yaegashi in the 9th round of their Sept. 2014 fight.

By that point, Estrada was an established unified flyweight titlist. Estrada achieved that status in a 12-round win over Brian Viloria in April 2013, one fight after the loss to Gonzalez and making six successful defenses before moving up to junior bantamweight in 2016.
