Garcia's first fight in 15 months has been officially confirmed.

The undefeated Ryan “King Ry” Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) makes his return to the ring on Saturday, April 9, against Emmanuel “The Gameboy” Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs). The 12-round, lightweight showdown will take place at San Antonio’s historic Alamodome and will be streamed live worldwide on DAZN.

Fans have been awaiting the return of Garcia, a skilled, lightning-fast puncher who has steadily climbed the ranks of the lightweight division. A big win against Tagoe, a top 10 contender, would propel Garcia towards the top of the division.

Garcia has defeated tough contenders like Romero Duno, Francisco Fonseca, Carlos Morales, and Jason Velez, and was last seen in a spectacular seventh-round stoppage of 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Luke Campbell.

“I am excited and motivated to be back in the ring finally. I’m ready to do something special and give the fans a show they will never forget,” said Garcia. “I always want to make sure I give all my fans something memorable every time I fight.”

Tagoe, from Accra, Ghana, has accumulated various championships since his professional debut in 2004, including the IBF International, WBA International, and WBO Africa lightweight titles. The 32-year-old is currently ranked tenth by the WBC and has risen in the division’s ranks since his U.S. boxing debut in 2013 with a ninth-round stoppage of Gerardo Robles.

His last outing came on November 27, 2020, when Tagoe met former WBO NABO champion Mason Menard in a 10-round lightweight contest, defeating Menard via majority decision.

“I have always wanted a fight against Ryan Garcia. It’s a dream come true for me to be the main event in such an important fight,” said Tagoe.

“I am grateful to my manager, Peter Kahn, and promoter, Lou DiBella, for providing me with this opportunity. Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for finally getting this fight done. This is the second time I will be fighting on DAZN, and I will use this opportunity to show myself off to the world.

"All of the pressure is on Ryan. I am going to make Ghana proud, and everyone will know who Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe is after April 9 in San Antonio.”

“Fans have been anticipating the grand return of Ryan Garcia to the ring,” added Oscar De La Hoya, chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy. “Ryan has captivated the sport with his incredible speed and power, and on April 9th, fans will get to see a big Texas showdown at the historic Alamodome. Emmanuel Tagoe is a top 10 lightweight contender, so this will be a challenging fight for Ryan. I can guarantee that April 9th will be a night fans will remember as Ryan’s grand return to boxing.”

“It’s great for boxing that Ryan Garcia is returning to the ring and, after a significant layoff, Ryan is taking on a legitimate top ten contender,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Emmanuel Tagoe has won 32 fights in a row, is hungry, and is one of the top boxing talents from Ghana. A hungry Ghanaian contender is a dangerous opponent, and the world is going to see it on April 9.”

“Ryan Garcia is fast becoming one of the biggest names in the sport, and we are thrilled to see him return April 9th against a very tough competitor in Emmanuel Tagoe,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights, DAZN.

“Ryan has already made a huge statement in the highly competitive lightweight division, and we look forward to broadcasting this can't-miss event live and exclusively worldwide as part of a completely stacked spring boxing schedule on DAZN.”

Gabriel Rosado-Shane Mosley Jr. Eyed For April 9 DAZN Card Topped By Garcia-Tagoe

Two veteran boxers in need of a win will meet at the crossroads.

BoxingScene.com has learned that plans are in place for a middleweight clash between Gabriel Rosado and Shane Mosley Jr. The bout will serve in supporting capacity to the return of top lightweight contender Ryan Garcia, who faces Ghana’s Emmanuel Tagoe atop an April 9 show from Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Rosado and Mosley are both coming off competitive losses in their previous fights.

Philadelphia’s Rosado (26-14-1, 15KOs)—who now lives in Los Angeles and trains in Hollywood—came up short in a spirited twelve-round slugfest with former WBO junior middleweight champ and current middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31KOs) last November at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The hard-fought defeat came five months after a career-resurrecting third-round knockout of unbeaten Bektemir Melikuziev last June in El Paso, Texas.

The fight with Mosley will mark his sixth to air on DAZN, along with one other bout taking place on the non-televised undercard of a DAZN show. The 36-year-old former title challenger has remained a fan favorite during a 16-plus year career known for his willingness to accept any opponent with few questions asked.

Mosley (17-4, 10KOs) has not fought since a disputed ten-round, majority decision defeat to Ireland’s Jason Quigley last May 29 in Las Vegas. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the second-generation boxer, as Quigley went on to challenge for the WBO middleweight title in his next fight.

The defeat snapped a steady run for Mosley, whose father Shane Sr. is a Hall of Fame-elected former three-division champion. The younger Mosley claimed a fifth-round stoppage of Cristian Olivas last February in Indio, California, his fourth straight win after dropping a ten-round decision to Brandon Adams in the season five finale of ‘The Contender’ in November 2018.

Rosado-Mosley comes as part of a card that will see Victorville, California’s Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) fight for the first time since an off-the-canvas, seventh-round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell last January.

The 15-month stretch between fights included a mental health reset for Garcia along with physical rehabilitation following surgery to repair his injured right wrist. The fight with Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs) will mark his first under new head trainer Joe Goossen following his recent split from two-time and reigning Trainer of the Year Eddy Reynoso.

The Alamodome on April 9 will be a night full of exciting action as popular fighters make their grand return to the ring for the first time in 2022.

Houston’s Marlen Esparza (11-1, 1 KOs) will take on Tokyo’s Naoko Fujioka (19-2-1, 17 KOs) in a 10-round fight in a showdown for the WBC and WBA flyweight world championships. The historic two-title showdown will be featured as part of the undercard for Ryan Garcia vs. Emmanuel Tagoe in San Antonio, Texas, live, worldwide on DAZN. Also, part of the DAZN live stream, “King” Gabriel Rosado (26-14-1, 15 KOs) of Philadelphia, PA, will face-off against Shane Mosley Jr. (17-4, 10 KOs) of Pomona, CA in a 10-round fight for the WBA Continental Americas super middleweight title.

“I am training hard and excited for my return to San Antonio,” said Marlen Esparza. “We are both champions, and we get to fight for the first-ever ring magazine women’s flyweight world championship. Fireworks are what you can expect on April 9.”

“I am grateful to Golden Boy and everybody making this fight happen,” said Naoko Fujioka. “I believe that my last victory against Sulem Urbina opened the door for this bigger opportunity to fight Marlen Esparza and unify world titles. I’ve never been more excited. I am ready to go to her backyard and win!”

“I’m excited to get back and start the new year with a bang,” said Gabriel Rosado. “I’m back at 168, where I feel more comfortable. I won’t take Shane Mosley Jr. lightly, this is a big step-up fight for him, and I expect him to be at his best. I’m looking forward to making a run at the super middleweight division, and Shane Jr. is in my way. I respect his father, who is one of the best to do it. So this fight is nothing personal, it’s strictly business, and I plan to get the job done and put on a show for the fans in San Antonio, Texas! Get your popcorn ready, the ‘King’ is back!!!”

“I’m excited for the opportunity to fight on such a great card, and I can’t wait to get back in the ring,” said Shane Mosley, Jr. “This is going to be my first fight in 2022, and I am ready to show fans an exciting show on April 9.”

“We are excited and proud to put on a fan-friendly undercard for the anticipated matchup between Ryan Garcia and Emmanuel Tagoe,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “We always want to keep the fans in mind when we put together fights, and I know they will be glad to witness history in the making when #1 world-ranked Marlen Esparza faces #2 Naoko Fujioka for the inaugural Ring Magazine Flyweight World Championship. Both fierce fighters will also put their WBC and WBA Flyweight World Championships on the line for the honor of being crowned the unified female flyweight world champion. Also on the live stream, exciting warriors, Gabriel Rosado and Shane Mosley, Jr. will face off in a fan-friendly bout. This is a major test for both fighters as they both move up to super middleweight in a bid to forge a new path in the sport. I am so excited for this event; I can assure fans that San Antonio will be the place to be on April 9.”

2012 Bronze Olympic medal winner and current WBC flyweight world champion Esparza is seeking to make history when she faces WBA flyweight world champion Naoko Fujioka on April 9. Esparza is coming off a decision victory over former two-time world champion Anabel Ortiz in December 2021.

Fujioka is a five-division world champion, the first in Japan, and has faced tough opposition in her rise in the sport, beating the likes of Isabel Millan, Irma Sanchez, and Yosaka Valle. She was seen in July 2021, defeating Sulem Urbina, successfully defending her WBA flyweight world championship for the third time.

Patrick Teixeira-Glen Tapia Added To April 9 Undercard, Preceding DAZN Show Topped By Garcia-Tagoe
patrick-teixeira%20(2).jpg

BY JAKE DONOVAN

Patrick Teixeira has a new fight date after watching the past two fall through for reasons well beyond his control.

The former WBO junior middleweight titlist has been added to the already announced April 9 Golden Boy Promotions show at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Teixeira will face New Jersey’s Glen Tapia in a scheduled ten-round junior middleweight bout as confirmed to BoxingScene.com by Patrick Nascimento, Teixeira’s career-long manager.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed that Teixeira-Tapia will not be part of the main card airing live on DAZN, which is headlined by a scheduled 12-round bout above the lightweight limit between Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) and Emmanuel Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs). The junior middleweight bout will instead headline the preliminary undercard which will stream on Golden Boy’s YouTube channel preceding the DAZN telecast.

Teixeira (31-2, 22KOs) has not fought since a twelve-round loss to Brian Castano last February 13, which ended his WBO junior middleweight title reign after 14 months though without a successful title defense. The 31-year-old southpaw from Sao Paulo, Brazil was due to next face Russia’s Magomed Kurbanov, only to lose out on two separate fight dates.

The bout was first due to take place last December 11 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, with both boxers making weight. Kurbanov complained of feeling ill of fever-like symptoms after the weigh-in, spending the rest of the day and evening in isolation. His fever accelerated to the point of having to withdraw the morning of the fight.

Efforts to reschedule the fight for March 26 proved futile upon Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The war prompted all four major sanctioning bodies—including the WBO, whose regional title was at stake—to withdraw its approval of any fights taking place in Russia during such time, prompting event handlers to cancel the show as a whole.

Nascimento and Golden Boy have since worked nonstop to secure a fight date with Teixeira for the sake of not allowing two consecutive training camps to go to waste. Such an approach is understandable for the sake of the fighter, though his latest opponent is not well-received by the general public.

Tapia (24-5, 16KOs) will enter on the heels of a first-round knockout of Thailand’s Narong Bunchan last September in Dubai. The win—which took place at super middleweight— was the first for Tapia since March 2015. Wedged in between that six-year gap are four damaging defeats, including a sixth-round stoppage at the hands of Gabriel Rosado in October 2017, his last fight to have taken place in the U.S.

A medical suspension was in place following the loss to Rosado—his third inside the distance over that four-fight stretch—but was lifted on July 12, 2018 according to official records obtained by BoxingScene.com. Four of the five defeats suffered by Tapia occurred inside the distance. The lone exception was a lopsided ten-round decision to Ireland’s Jason Quigley in March 2017.

Teixeira claimed an interim version of the WBO junior middleweight title following a career-best, twelve-round points win over Carlos Adames in November 2019. An upgrade to full title status was granted on December 5, 2019, on Teixeira’s 29th birthday and during the annual WBO convention upon confirmation that Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31KOs) officialy vacated his title to instead campaign at middleweight.
