David Benavidez and David Lemieux will meet on May 21 at Footprint Arena in Phoenix, Benavidez's hometown, for a Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime main event, sources told ESPN on Friday.

ESPN reported in December that the boxers signed contracts for the 168-pound bout that could line the winner up for a shot at a title held by Canelo Alvarez.

Already, Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) is looking ahead. He won't fight Canelo in 2022 after Alvarez chose a path that will lead to a September trilogy bout with Gennadiy Golovkin, so Benavidez expressed interest last month in a matchup with Demetrius Andrade.

The longtime middleweight champion is moving up to 168 pounds for a fight with Zach Parker that's slated for May 21 in the United Kingdom.

"I want to challenge myself," said Benavidez, ESPN's No. 2 super middleweight. "I'm tired of talking s--- and going back and forth with fighters that don't want to fight. It's a waste of time. It's a waste of energy. If a fighter does want to fight, that's what I'm here for. I'm not here to be on social media talking s--- to everybody."

The volume-punching Benavidez has twice held a 168-pound title and has never lost it in the ring. Instead, the 25-year-old was stripped once after testing positive for cocaine and a second time after failing to make weight.

Benavidez was slated to face Jose Uzcategui in November, but the fight was scrapped after Uzcategui tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Kyrone Davis stepped in on short notice and was stopped in the seventh round by Benavidez.

Lemieux (43-4, 35 KOs) promises to offer far more resistance. The former middleweight champion is 3-0 since moving to 168 pounds and is ranked No. 8 by ESPN, but Lemieux has yet to fight anyone approaching the top 10. Now, the 33-year-old will be installed as an underdog against Benavidez in what shapes up as an all-action fight.

The Montreal native was one of the biggest punchers in boxing when he campaigned at 160 pounds. That includes a spectacular KO of Curtis Stevens in 2017. During that middleweight run, he also scored a TKO victory over Gabe Rosado. Among his title defeats: a one-sided TKO loss to Golovkin and a lopsided decision defeat vs. Billy Joe Saunders.

Lemieux: Benavidez Definitely On His Way To Elite Level, But I'm Here To Break That Pattern

David Lemieux knew what he signed up for when he agreed to hit the road for his next fight.

A dangerous showdown with unbeaten and former two-time WBC super middleweight titlist David Benavidez is on deck for Montreal’s Lemieux (43-4, 36KOs), a former IBF middleweight titlist. Their interim WBC super middleweight title fight will take place May 21 on Showtime from Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, less than 30 minutes from Benavidez’s childhood hometown of Phoenix where he has established himself as a proven draw.

In addition to hometown advantage, Benavidez is in the heart of his prime and fits in well with the class of opposition that his more experienced opponent has faced to date.

“He’s definitely part of the top guys,” Lemieux admitted during a virtual press conference with media members to discuss the upcoming fight. “He hasn’t fought yet against the elite level. He’s definitely on his way but I’m here to break that pattern.”

The fight comes about while the WBC and every other super middleweight belt is tied up by undisputed champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs), who has already mapped out his 2022 campaign.

Guadalajara’s Alvarez will next challenge WBA light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11KOs) on May 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Win or lose, the plan is to drop back down in weight for a trilogy clash with IBF/WBA middleweight titlist Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 37KOs) who will move up to 168 pounds for a targeted September 17 clash.

The Benavidez-Lemieux winner will claim the WBC interim title along with becoming the mandatory challenger to Alvarez. However, nobody in the industry expects the fight to be ordered through the rest of the year. The winner will instead be left to seek out the best challenges possible, a familiar tale for Benavidez who has struggled to land the best competition.

Lemieux has been in there with Golovkin and Billy Joe Saunders, both resulting in title fight defeats. The 33-year-old believes there is plenty left in the tank, enough to where he’s willing to take on a dangerous foe such as Benavidez.

“For sure, I’m fighting in his hometown. It’s not to my advantage but I’m putting in all the hard work,” noted Lemieux, who has won five straight including three in a row since moving up to super middleweight. “It’s a big task but I’m going to be ready for it.”

Rising Dominican prospect Luis “The Twist” Nunez will battle fellow unbeaten Jonathan Fierro in the 10-round featherweight telecast opener live on SHOWTIME Saturday, May 21 from Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast is headlined by unbeaten two-time world champion and Arizona-native David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez returning to fight in his home state for the second-straight bout as he takes on former world champion David Lemieux for the vacant Interim WBC Super Middleweight Title. The telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and also features hard-hitting Cuban prospect Yoelvis Gómez taking on Mexico’s Jorge Cota in the 10-round super welterweight co-main event.

The non-televised undercard will see former world champion “Vicious” Victor Ortiz (32-7-3, 25 KOs) in a 10-round super welterweight attraction against Todd Manuel (20-19-1, 6 KOs) and Mayweather Promotions’ rising unbeaten super lightweight contender Richardson Hitchins (13-0, 5 KOs) in a 10-round bout against Mexico’s Angel Rodriguez (12-10-3, 5 KOs).

A trio of Arizona-based prospects will also compete on the undercard, as super featherweight and Mesa-native Jesus Abel Ibarra (13-0, 6 KOs) steps in for a six-round contest against Mexico’s Moises Flores (25-6-1, 17 KOs), Glendale’s own Elijah Garcia (10-0, 9 KOs) competes in a six-round middleweight affair battling California’s Rowdy Montgomery (7-3-1, 5 KOs), while Mesa’s Micky Scala (5-0, 3 KOs), an intriguing prospect in the Mayweather Promotions stable, enters the ring facing Iowa’s Mike Plazola (2-1, 1 KO) for six rounds of super welterweight action.

Rounding out the lineup is welterweight Estevan Villalobos (15-1-1, 11 KOs) going up against Houston’s Christon Edwards (13-3, 6 KOs) in an eight-round bout, lightweight prospect Julio Hernandez (1-0, 1 KO) in a four-round duel, and the pro debut of Chavon Stillwell taking on Brent Oren (4-8, 1 KO) for a six-round super middleweight showdown.

After piling up an 85-5 amateur record, Núñez (16-0, 12 KOs) turned pro in 2018 and racked up knockouts in eight of his first nine outings. Fighting out of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Núñez made his U.S. debut in September 2021 by winning a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Jayvon Garnett on SHOBOX: The New Generation®. The 22-year-old followed up that performance by taking down another undefeated fighter, as he stopped Carlos Arrieta in the 10th round of their January showdown, also on SHOBOX®.

“Not many fighters get the opportunities that have been given to me,” said Núñez. “I feel blessed and grateful to be in this position. It was a great honor to fight on SHOWTIME in my last fight and I’m thankful to my whole team for being put on this platform. I’m going to make the most of this chance that I have. The best is yet to come!”

The 18-year-old Fierro (13-0, 12 KOs) made his U.S. debut in Arizona last November, as he stopped Victor Ruiz in the first round. A native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Fierro most recently knocked out the previously unbeaten Daniel Bailey in March. A pro since late 2019, Fierro scored knockouts in his first seven fights before winning an eight-round unanimous decision in April 2021.

“First of all I want to thank everyone that has made this great opportunity possible for me,” said Fierro. “This is a dream come true and I can’t wait to get in the ring. I am training extremely hard to be at my best and show everyone what I’m capable of. Luis Núñez is a great fighter, but come May 21, he will know what it is to fight a true Mexican style warrior.”

Had no idea Richardson Hitchins was on this card and it was untelevised, how did that happen after the Hawkins performance.
