Rapper 50 Cent recently entered the art game — sort of. The entrepreneur and hip hop artist kicked off his headphone brand SMS Audio’s partnership with Intel on their new BioSport biometric headphones — they measure your heart rate and track your progress! — with a soirée at the New Museum’s Sky Room. For the occasion, creative agency Sid Lee, New Museum Incubator member and Tool interactive director Aramique, along with a team consisting of Jeff Crouse, Ranjit Bhatnagar, Matt Mets and Adam Thabo collaborated on an interactive way to make art called The Heart Bot. Here’s a simple description of The Heart Bot:
“The Heart Bot is an experimental drawing machine controlled by the heart rate of a viewer. Heart Bot collects heart rate data from a large group of people during a fixed time, at a fixed location and translates it into generative art, demonstrating that each individual experiences a moment in a very personal way.”
Basically, you put your hand on a sensor, it reads your heart rate, and then a mechanical arm traces the pattern of your heart rate on to a piece of paper. That August night, several of the attendees, including 50 Cent, got in on the action. The finished product was a work of collective art that will go to Feeding America.
