On top of that, harsh sentencing laws and a regressive bail system fuels one of the highest incarceration rates in the country, hitting Black people the hardest. Economic policies keep the minimum wage low and limit access to social programs, pushing more Black people into poverty. Education policies that have schools struggling with funding gaps and biased discipline measures holding back Black students, and harming their future success. His environmental policies also allow industrial pollution near Black neighborhoods and with inadequate climate resilience measures, they further threaten the health and well-being of Black residents. And while Medicaid was expanded, there are still ongoing efforts by him and his legislature to limit healthcare access, which adversely affects Black residents, who face higher rates of chronic diseases.
