Jackson’s SMS Promotions #sms has Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16), a Cuban featherweight, who is meeting Michael Farenas (33-3-4, 25 KOs) for the WBA interim super featherweight title.
“I’ll work my way past those obstacles, because I will continue to be surrounded by more great talent moving forward,” Jackson said. “It will create more influence and power where the networks (HBO and Showtime) will have to roll or they will lose the ability to utilize the fighters.”
Jackson got into the boxing business through his friendship with Floyd Mayweather, Jr., whom he described as “like a brother to me.” They are now estranged because of a failed business partnership. Jackson has struck out on his own and has formed an alliance with Bob Arum of Top Rank, a Mayweather nemesis. Arum once promoted Mayweather, but it ended badly.
Arum is impressed with Jackson’s business acumen and believes he will be a successful boxing promoter.
“He is the one person that has the ability to reach out and attract the urban audience that we’re lacking from our fan base,” Arum said. “If he can energize the urban market where only Mayweather has been able to do that he could add hundreds of thousands of customers to the fights.”
That’s what Jackson thought he could do with Mayweather, the biggest attraction in boxing and the highest-paid professional athlete in the world ($85 million in 2012, according to Forbes Magazine). But their joint promotional venture, which was supposed to be called “TMT” (The Money Team), crashed before takeoff.
Jackson said he tried to build the company by signing boxers while Mayweather was in jail this summer serving 90 days on a domestic violence charge. He said Mayweather was fine with that, until he was released from jail and balked at paying his half of the expenses for the joint venture.
“His decision to not participate by not financially offering his half of the finances came by way of his advisers that are afraid (of me),” Jackson said. “If you start burying bodies, you start to learn your way around the cemetery. They don’t want him to be informed. They don’t want him to have information. They make me a complete enemy on what’s going on there.’’
Jackson said Mayweather’s promotional company is a sham.
