Jermall Charlo will make another optional title defense June 19.

Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime announced Thursday that Charlo will meet Mexico’s Juan Macias Montiel in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event that night at a venue to be determined in Houston, Charlo’s hometown. Mexico’s Montiel is the WBC’s fourth-rated middleweight contender for Charlo’s championship.

Charlo-Montiel was one of seven world title fights Showtime and PBC announced as part of a four-month slate of fights that’ll begin May 15 and conclude September 11.

The 30-year-old Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) produced perhaps the most impressive victory over his career in his last fight. The former IBF junior middleweight champion convincingly beat Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-3, 10 KOs) in their 12-round fight for Charlo’s title September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Derevyanchenko gave Gennadiy Golovkin the most grueling fight of his career in his previous appearance, but Charlo handled him easier than Golovkin or Daniel Jacobs. Golovkin narrowly won a unanimous decision versus Derevyanchenko in October 2019 at Madison Square Garden, 11 months after Jacobs edged him by split decision in their 12-rounder at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater.

Charlo’s critics questioned his level of opposition in middleweight matches before he beat Derevyanchenko. Charlo continued to state after defeating Derevyanchenko that he wants career-defining fights against Canelo Alvarez or Golovkin, but he’ll remain busy against another underdog while waiting for such significant fights to materialize.

Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) knocked out former contender James Kirkland in the first round of his most recent bout, December 26 at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old Montiel dropped Kirkland three times before their scheduled 10-rounder was stopped just one minute and 56 seconds into it.

In the bout before he destroyed Kirkland (34-3, 30 KOs), Montiel fought to a 10-round split draw with Huge Centeno Jr. in December 2019 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Charlo knocked out Centeno (27-3-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC), of Oxnard, California, in the second round of their April 2018 bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Former WBO junior middleweight champ Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) also knocked out Montiel in the second round of their February 2017 battle in Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico. Munguia is the WBC’s number one contender for Charlo’s title.

What a f*cking joke. Pathetic really. Jermall will never fight someone with a pulse. Just barks all day but always ends up fighting scrawny Mexicans or over the hill Europeans. Dude is a fraud. :scust:

Lioness Only stans avoiding this topic, but you could easily find them badmouthing wayyyy more accomplished fighters in this division in all types of other threads:unimpressed:

can we stop saying Charlo? At least his lil bro Jermell is attempting to go undisputed in one of the strongest divisions in boxing right now. Jermall doesn't deserve the Charlo name.

100% accurate. It’s just that he was the “big charlo”, undefeated, ducked by everyone ( :comeon:) etc. But yes, we should make sure we just call him Jermall instead.
